Vitamin A (also called the sex vitamin for reasons that i can't mention on here) has several purposes. The most important ones are for a good functioning of the eyes and a healthy skin. This is however not the only vitamin that takes care of your skin. There are plenty of people who , especially those working behind a computer, have sore and red eyes caused by what i would call screen exhaustion. What they then do (or should do) is take a vitamin A complex for a few days or weeks and then the soreness is over, usually already after three or four days. When you experience irritated eyes its usually a sign that you lack vitamin A because your eyes (and brains) are the largest consumer of this vitamin. The liver stores enough of it so you won't have to continually take the supplement. A couple of months a year for those computerworkers should be enough... As always, eat healthy and enough red/orange vegetables and you won't need vitamin A supplements....

Vitamin A is essential for good health—notably for eyes and skin, immune function, reproduction, and bone growth. That's why nonfat and low-fat milk, margarine, and many breakfast cereals are fortified with it. However, high doses of vitamin A taken over time can be dangerous, especially for pregnant women (the vitamin is fat-soluble and is stored in the body, so levels can build up). Now a Harvard study suggests that Levels of vitamin A once considered safe and healthful may weaken women's bones and increase the risk of fractures.
