They have a material in the bag that heats up and helps the popcorn pop better. (It's the silvery stuff on the "This Side Down" part of the bag.)
I'm guessing that it can cause the paper to overheat if you leave it in the microwave too long after the popcorn pops. The popcorn would absorb the heat as it pops, but once it's done, it burns and so does the paper bag.
Again, that's just my guess.

You could just explain what happened even if the smell isn't gone. You shouldn't get in trouble for an accident, especially if oyu're honest and upfront about it.

you pobably have your microwave set too high and need to pop it less time then the bag says to.

because you're not supposed to heat then over an open flame. put it in the microwave.
