Interpolation is a mathematical method of creating missing data. An image can be increased from 100 pixels to 200 pixels through interpolation. There are many methods of interpolation, but one simple method would be to generate a new pixel by using the average of the value of the two pixels on either side of the one to be created. Back to top, my camera has it, since my camera is a 4mb camera but it can take 8mb pictures using interpolation, but the picture can get really broken up and the pixles are out of place.

Interpolation is when unknown data between two (or more) known data points is calculated from the known values. Meaning that when you zoom up, pixels have to be created. The camera can either zoom every pixel or it can interpolate (calculate) the values of the missing pixels. The latter gives you a better picture because it smooths out the transitions. Whereas, the former just gives you a bigger, but pixelated looking picture. Interpolation is very common in image processing. Bi-cubic is the best, it uses a 4 by 4 matrix of the image and weights the value based on its distance to the calculated pixel. Bi-linear is also fairly good. It uses a 2 by 2 matrix and it is not weighted.

**Extra useless info warning**
Interpolation is different than extrapolation in that interpolation calculates values that are between known values. Extrapolation calculates values that are outside of the range of known values.

Artificially making the image sharper by splitting the pixels actually captured by the CCD into smaller ones and calculating from what is on each side whether to make them still the same as each other or each side matching what they are next to. I had a little camera that took excellent 10 Mp pictures with a 3Mp CCD but it wasn't tough enough, and died when taken out on a misty day.
