3 free things that help:
Exercise
Accomplishments
Extrovert

Exercise helps your body make stress relieving chemicals and feel-good chemicals naturally. You can help this process with a healthy diet.

Accomplishments build self-esteem. When you have that, you are less affected by the world, as you have an effect on it. They also motivate you to accomplish more, and feel better.

Become an extrovert. Quit being self-absorbed. No one cares. Make it all about other people, not yourself. Don't hide your wonderful personality behind your fear and intimidation. We all have anxiety. Your character is determined by how you handle it. Notice other people and the things they are hoping will ne noticed.

Compliment people and make positive observations. Break the ice and build rapport. First, compliment, then ask a question. Draw them out. Make their day. It will feel so good to you inside. Remember peoples' names and a detain about them. Ask them about it next time you see them. Give others what you wish they would give you. Do it freely without exception or expectation.

Realize that some medications actually prevent you from dealing with issues by acting like a crutch. Changing your perspective and taking care of yourself is a better way to deal.

Change "I can't" to "I am not willing to". Realize that challenges are opportunities. Each challenge gives you the opportunity to learn, grow, overcome, and improve something.

You can look online for some dietary recommendations that will help your body regulate seratonin, and which types of exerciese will help you make more dopamine, norepenepherine, and endorphins. www.emotionalhealth.com

I used to take Prozac. I was able to kick it with ease. I simply changed my diet, and started practicing yoga and meditation. If you eat sugar...STOP NOW. Sugar is a neurotoxin and causes all kinds of crazy imbalances in the body and brain. Choose only foods that are free of artificial ingredients, like flavors, colors, sweeteners, etc. Eat foods that are the closest in form to the way the came out of the ground: whole grains (avoid wheat), fresh fruits and vegetables. For a "sugar fix" try sweetening things with honey or maple syrup. Sunlight and exercise increase production and reception of serotonin. During the winter months, I go tanning. Just once a week for 10-15 minutes...not trying to damage my skin of course.
Bikram Yoga is a wonderful way to beat the blues. It is a type of yoga practiced in a very hot room (105 degrees). It flushes toxins out of your system, as well as burns 600-900 calories in one class. I've never felt better than I do when I leave a Bikram class. If meditation is hard for you, try buying a tape or CD of a guided meditation. That way you can relax as someones voice guides your mind. I was taking 50 milligrams (I think that's how it comes) of Prozac for a while. I was afraid I would be dependent on it forever. I now feel great, with *NO* meds! I will tell you that it is a lot easier to wean yourself off, than to go cold turkey. And, it is also a lot easier to make this change in the spring, with all of the extra sunlight and warmth. But it all depends on where you live and what the weather is like right now. Good luck!

My mom has seasonal depression, and she used to use a full-spectrum light in the fall and winter as a replacement for sunlight. It didn't really work for her, but everyone is different. Another way is taking time to do fun things or relax. This won't cure depression or anxiety, but try not to spend too much time by yourself, being with friends always puts me in a good mood. If you can't afford prescription medicine, you probably can't afford therapy, but keep it in mind, it's money well-spent.

Try Valerian root and/ or St. John's wort. Why did your insurance copany decide not cover the medication? Sounds like a crappy insurance company to me. I would appeal the decision, and, contact the insurance department in the state where you live. Also, ask your doctor about a generic medication. Walmart now has many prescriptions for medications that you can get for $4 for a one months supply. Costco is also very reasonable. Check out their drug prices!
