i dont think 'like a living hell' is a good pharse to use especially for a paper because a paper is supposed to be formal in every way and using 'like a living hell' makes it informal....you can use other pharses or words like difficult, hard or gruesome etc depending on the context in which you want to use it.
hope i helped

I think the 8th grader should not get in trouble for using that in an essay or a report because being in war is like being in hell.
If I was the teacher I would accept it, My father-in-law was in the Vietnam war and when I asked him to describe it, that's exactly what he said."like a living hell" so you are just telling the truth.
BUT, i don't know if Ur teacher will understand.SO just to be on the safe side ask her before you write that in there.
Good luck, i hope u get a good grade......L8RS

Yes, I am almost certain that you would be in some sort of troublr for using that phrase. Now that schools almost everywhere have a no tolerence policy it seems to be reflected in all aspects of school, even a paper on the Vietnam war. If I were you I would choose a different way of saying it just to avoid trouble, or ask your teacher if it is acceptable, they will tell you for sure, but if the paper is due before you have a chance to ask, leave it out! Good Luck!

If someone described Vietnam as "like a living hell" and you're quoting that person, I don't think it would be a problem. You might want to say something like, "One veteran described the conditions as 'a living hell'". Is the paper due on Monday? If so, you're going to have to make the decision on your own. If you have more time, you should ask the teacher what he/she would think, then edit your paper as appropriate. Your teacher will also appreciate the fact that you took the time to approach him/her and ask. That's what they're there for. Good luck!

Of course not; that's exactly what the war was. Are you afraid of using the word 'hell' in your paper? Well, you're not using the word in its cursing sense, you're simply comparing the war to something terrible and evil. The word 'hell' is quite fitting in that similie.
