What kind of thing in the treat makes it good anyway?

One thing our trainer said to use is microwaved hotdogs, cut into little pieces. They smell better if they've been cooked. This is only to use for training purposes tho and not the every day treat.

Another one she suggested is to buy boneless chicken when it's on sale and boil it with a little garlic. Then cut up small pieces for training.

Basically, you have to find something your dog REALLY likes... and this will vary from dog to dog. Another good idea is to make sure you don't feed your dog right before a training session as he may not be as interested in the treats if he's not got much of an appetite.

I also buy "Authority" liver treats at Petsmart and cut them into smaller pieces to use for training. My dog just loves the liver taste. But they come rather large, too large for training needs... my dog would be full after a short time of using them for reward.

Good Luck!

Cheese. It has an odor, so the booger knows you have it in your hand. If he/she knows he's/she's gonna get a goodie, it's more likely you will be obeyed. Plus cheese, in moderation, is good for the dog. No chocolate, and no regular treats that you issue just for fun. A regular treat will not give any motivation to the puppy.

I have never eaten a dog treat, so I have no idea what makes it so appealing. My dogs like them, and that is all that matters I guess. We went to the Petco treat bar and got a bunch of the little bitty ones. Worked pretty well and they were nice and cheap.

I would suggest not using treats for training your dog at all. Reward your dog verbally and not with food or else your dog will never do anything you teach him unless he is bribed with a treat. Saying "Good boy/girl!" will leave the dog just as happy.

You should use treats very seldom, because if you always use treats the dog will expect them when you use a command your trying to teach him, give him praises, pet him, tell him good boy or girl. only reward him when you see him really grasping what your trying to teach him but not to many treats.

tiny treats are best but as far as brands just check to make sure they don't have mercury and they will work. also make sure your dog isn't allergic to them.
