I've heard it translated as:

Brother
Good man
Husband
Father
and as a individual guy's name

I've also heard that Korean girls will use the word with their boyfriend/husband in bed to let him know that (ahem) he's really good in bed-like Oh! God! Yes!

What does it REALLY mean? (This is entirely to touchy to use babel fish on and everyone I've asked seems to have a different answer-I'm going to go with 'majority rules' on this one)

Hell, the English subtitles alone gave at least 3 different meanings for 'oppa' in 'You Are My Sunshine'...

true definition of this KOREAN word is: what a female calls an older male when they are related/ OR/ have a close relationship like a friend or a boyfriend. (MALES DO NOT/CANNOT USE THIS WORD TO REFER TO AN OLDER MALE! unless they're gay or something, in which case, they'll get their asses kicked in an instant!). it simply means OLDER BROTHER, but females use it.

when not to use the word:
1. if the older male is MARRIED and you (female) are not a family!
2. if the older male is MUCH, MUCH older!
3. if you do not have ANY sort of relationship w/ the older male!
4. if the older male is a CO-WORKER -or- in working environment!

some wives will call their husbands this word because they are so used to saying it during dating. most of them are newly weds.

definitely NOT A FATHER!~!!!!!
