The Cheapest "Champagne" you will find is around $30-$40 a bottle, this is for actual champagne from France. Everything else is really considered sparkling wine.

I think the best tasting and most reasonable sparking wine is called Pink by Yellow Glen.

It is an Australian "Champagne/sparking wine" It runs about $9-$10 a bottle. Much better than Cooks or Andre, which would be cheap cheap stuff, but cheaper than Chandon, and Mumm Napa.

Try it before you buy for a big dinner party, but try it, I am sure you will like it.

Well, actual champagne is not very cheap because it comes from the Champagne region in France. Your best bet for a dinner party is a sparkling wine. You do not want to give your guests something that is $5 a bottle because the taste is a lesser quality. General rule of thumb is to go for a bottle that is in the $10 range. One I just ran across and really like it is Prosecco Italian Sparkling Wine by Zardetto. It is $10 and a really good bubbly.

I agree Martini and Rossi or any other brand of italian sparkling wine Called Asti Spumante. It's sweeter and more of an after dinner drink.... only about $5 per bottle

For a fun and sophisticated sparkling wine I suggest one of my fave's, "Risque" bottled by Les Vignerons du Sieur d'Arques in Limoux, France -- for Toad Hollow Vineyards in Healdsburg, CA. It has ample fruit (apples, pears) and a finish, which is not too dry. It is not too sweet either, but refreshing and very inexpensive. (about $15.00-$17.00). The label is a conversation piece itself (a frog in a flapper dress); this sparkling wine has been a huge hit whenever I have served it!
They also make an incredible ros'e, perhaps for another occasion!

My husband is French but we use Freixinet Spanish sparkling white wine instead of spending all that money on champagne. It comes in a black bottle and is very dry and tastes like expensive champagne. You can usually find Freixinet in the grocery store.

By rights only wine grown in the Champagne region of France has the right to be called Champagne: all other wines should be called sparkling wine.
