As more shopping malls find way into our neighbourhood street and petrol stations expand their services to include conveniences shopping and take-away, we can no longer expect our neighbourhood streets to be the social and recreational public spaces they once were.

Shopping malls brings in crowds, traffic resulting in noise, pollution. So neighbourhood streets may no longer remain the same way it was earlier. Trees, gardens will vanish. traffic jams will result.

My neighbourhood is still very sociable despite living within 1 mile of a huge shopping mall. Mums and Dads gather at the school gate and we have lots of community learning opportunities and green spaces where events take place, so I think the social argument is lost. Obviously older people do tend to use local shops more if they are there but there are lots of OAP activities in our community too. The local shops in our area are newsagents a couple of Post Offices, hairdressers, and eateries not much change really over the last 30 or so yeras I can remeber. We have lost an ice cream parlour and a butchers shop but the shops are again occupied by other businesses.

Yes, I would agree. When I was younger, the local shops were a place for people (mainly mums) to meet and gossip whilst buying things. Everybody in our street knew everybody else.

Now, I stop off at the supermarket on the way home to do the weekly shop. Our village of about 2000 people used to have two butchers, a greengrocers, and other shops. Now it has just a convenience store, a post office and a newsagent.

When I was a child, we knew all of our neighbors. We looked out for each others property. Children could play anywhere and parents knew that their children were safe and being watched. Anything out of the ordinary would be reported by the neighbors.

As an adult, I know the people right next to me. That's it! It's a sign of the times. We're all busy. We have a billion choices on where to buy milk and meat. We don't have to stay in our own neighborhoods anymore.

I agree wholeheartedly. ON one hand, we have choices. On the other hand, we have lost so much.

YES! and it has nothing to do with shopping malls. It has to do with how paranoid people are. The media has frightened everyone to death. No one goes outside, no one goes for a walk, no one talks to their neighbors and no one says hello to a stranger...why? People haven't changed that much.
