The sr islamic cleric of Australia (mufti) claims that muslim rapists should have their prison sentences reduced because their victim, who wasn't dressed in traditional garb that covers a woman from head to toe, was "like raw meat left uncovered in the presence of dogs".
Since this fellow has ascended to the highest postion an islam can attain in Australia I assume that he is totally familiar with Islamic doctrine. Does this mean that muslims feel that men are really just animals, unable to control themselves ?
I watied to ask this question because I wanted to observe the official reaction from the Muslim church. I assumed he would be reprimanded and forced to apologize at the very least. Today I read that he has generously agreed to refrain from public speach for 3 months while he takes the pilgrimage to Mecca.
Why does the Muslim church have such a hard time denouncing those who say or do things that are flat out wrong ?

To clarify, I am not just critical of Islam. I have the similar criticisms for the Catholic Church and the ACLU for various boneheaded actions that stain the overall reputation of what should be fine institutions. To those who misunderstood my reference to "church" I wasn't speaking of a particular place of worship, I meant the institution of Islam itself.
ATK - American Freedom of speach protects you from gov't reprisal. It doesn't mean you are immune from individuals commenting on how stupid you are.
The Mufti was speaking in particular about 4 muslims who committed multiple gang rapes in Sidney in 2000. He said the only victims were white women and then went on to his "raw meat" comment

Thanks for taking the time to answer. Most used the question as a forum to promote or denounce Islam. To those who actually are Islamic, none of you said whether you approve of this man being a sr member of your religion. He forms the thoughts and opinions of your youth. Is this the type of thing that you want your children believing in ?? This particular mufti has also denied the holocaust, promoted suicide bombers and publicly hailed 9/11 as a glorious act.

Because according to some interpretations of Islam it is not wrong.
Christianity had a similar problem with slavery, both the Old and New testament did not condemn and often condone slavery yet it is flat out wrong. Until abolition in the US many priests used the bible to justify the owning of slaves (some still do!).

Dear Cain (can I call you that?),
This is the first time I came across this news as I'm not from Australia and dun surf the net much but this is my answer.
1. No. I dun ever come across any of muslim teachings that says men are animals. But any religion would shun upon a man who is a rapist. Dun u think?
2. He was reprimanded. He is not allowed to speak to the public for a few months. In his position, this will definitely shame him and in Islam, it is a sin to publicize other people's shame (talk bad about others, like what he did). That is why he was 'subtly reprimanded'. The apology should come.
3. I dun think they have this issue (in general). It's just how that paticular muslim community chooses to handle the situation. Subtly or openly. Just like any other religion handling sensitive issues within their community.
BTW. General info.
Muslim women 'traditional garb' (hijab) does not necessarily covers from head to toe. The face and palms are ideally left uncovered. However, those who choose to cover their face (with only eyes visible) or wear gloves, just do it for so many personal reasons may it be to protect their faces from sand/wind/heat (for those living near deserts) or just for comfort (yeah, some ppl prefer this way!). The hijab is a must. But whether or not you totally cover up (including your face and palms) is an option. I wear it too but ppl can still see my face!
*Note*
I dun think what a woman wears contributes much to the risk of her being raped. Once this case happened where I live, the woman was actually wearing hijab. And she was raped and murdered! How about that?

Why does the Muslim church have such a hard time denouncing those who say or do things that are flat out wrong?
a) they agree
b) if they did denounce it, other Muslims would call the denouncers West-lovers and anti-Islamic
Like you said... this guy is as high as you can get in the Islamic ladder of Australia. What makes you think he's alone? What makes you think that Muslim clerics disagree with this guy in Australia. If the Australian Muslim guy thinks this way, why not clerics in other countries where Islam is present?

The nomads of Egypt hold interesting laws that protect a woman's honour: correct me if I'm wrong but I'm told that if someone approaches a woman's tent he could get a certain length of his anatomy chopped off according to the distance/but not equal to the distance he aproached her. It's tribal but upholds a woman's honour and varies from region to region.
I think the age of consent is another hot potato; some claim Mohammad dreamt that Allah ordained underage stuff. Buy hey, he's got a big following: like the Mufti, I'm not sure whether he leads by example or just teaching.

I think your first paragraph is your own words [invented]. Because I didn't read anything that said about reducing Muslim prisoners' sentences.
Secondly there is no Muslim church, it's called Mosque.
Thirdly, his intention was good but the way he put his words was not so correct. Because that way all the blame is going to women only and not the rapists. And that is wrong.

Muslim people firmly believe this and you cannot argue against it, oh you may try to debate it with them but in the end you are not muslem but an infidel, so you are back to square one.
Amazing isn`t it that a God of love ,mercy and compassion would pass this garbage on to his creatures, the mind boggles.

This is a good example of the Western double standards; so where is freedom of speech that you always refer to when you unjustly attack Muslims and Islam? Which is more insulting this cleric remarks or the Danish cartoons?

Actually most Arab countries adopted a law that says 3 or more people have to actually witnessed the rape and willing to testify in order for the rapist to be prosecuted, making rape trials practically worthless to even try.

I don't beleive that is actually what he said, he did IMPLY that women not wrapped like mummies are inviting the attentions of men.
Actually it is not bestial men that are the problem it is the women, that are property trying to loose their leash and not honoring their position of chattel.
Which is actually the traditional islam party line.

Because they think Islam is perfect. Anytime someone shoots themself in the foot like that, it brings negative attention to Islam...the "perfect" religion.
