I think single people should pay the same amount based on their income and what they own. Why would single people need to pay anything different than legally recognized couples? It seems silly to me.

I'll bet you are single! If you ever get married you will think that married people should pay less. When you have children you will really thing you should pay less. If you get a divorce and pay child support, you will just start crying every April 15th. Regardless of your circumstances you will always thing that "your" taxes are too high and it should be others that have to pay.
