I have owned 3 VW's since 1986; a Golf, a Fox, and a Jetta. This is a common problem on Type II and III VW's. There is a 90%+ chance that the fuel relay switch is going bad. You are probably able to only get the car started, but not able to start it again after you have been driving for a while. The relay switch is a black square box (like a big plug on a cell phone charger) that is located near the fuse box under the dashboard. It snaps in and out. You should have someone check it out.

The O2 (oxygen sensor) may also be near replacement time. Only thing is, is that there is a separate red or yellow light (depending on the year of your car) that will specifically indicate that the O2 sensor needs to be replaced. This thing is also called a "glow plug". It can be a little pricey to have this thing replaced at the dealer, but is your best bet.

You may have an engine misfire, and that can cause the check engine light to come on, usually a major tune-up will take care of it.

If the lite is blinking it means you have a serious problem that could damage your engine. You need to check it immediately.
