My mom was like that also... she's still like that to this day- with anyone in the car driving- not just myself. So my dad was the main one who took me driving. It was funny because i was getting ready to pull in our driveway for the first time ever-but had no idea what speed I should go, and he's like, "slow down a bit, you'll knock the house down!" haha My dad was really cool about it and taught me a lot. I hope to do the same with my children.

I am 27 and just got my license at 22 because my boyfriend's Dad and Sister helped me get my license. The reason my parents didn't? My poor mom is too afraid to drive so she never got her license, which leaves my horrible Dad. His parents made him do EVERYTHING. So in his head I had to do everything on my own without his help because that was what he had to do at 16. Which didn't help me because the whole Mall/Walmart, DMV, Job market town is 13 miles away! (but would get on my back when I was 18 because I didn't have a job!)

My father put me behind the wheel of a car for the first time when I was 5 years old. I was sitting on his lap turning the wheel all by myself he was working the pedals. When I was 8 I sat behind the wheel of his truck he sat in the passengers seat and told me "go for it". We lived out in the country and owned many acres of land so no worries about hitting anything other then a ditch or two. When it came time at age 16 to get all my "permit hours" in prior to taking my official test I wouldn't allow my mom in the car with me {mostly because she was a police officer and very by the book} so it was again my dad who was with me. I never ran into a ditch I did go off the road once or twice but that's because at the time I didn't think you really needed to slow down to 30mph to go around a certain turn..lol
I didn't teach my kids{arent old enough} to drive but I did teach my oldest nephew. And I swear at times I think he forgot everything he ever knew when it comes to driving. Do not get in a car with that boy!

My father taught me to drive... He is calm to the point of catatonic nothing at all phases him.. When he was teaching me to drive I backed over the garden fence and he said "Well we will have to fix that later, put the car in drive and pull forward then try backing up again without the fence part." He didn't even raise his voice he was completely calm...
My father has taught all his grandchildren who are old enough to drive... He is still extremely calm... My daughter ran over a curb and hit the same garden fence I hit my father just laughed and said "I should have known, your mom hit that fence too." Then he continued on and taught her how to pull into the driveway without hitting the fence....
My younger sister has always been very high strung and when she tried to teach her husband how to drive it was a disaster.. With her yelling "We are gona die" and "Just let me drive you will never learn" he was a wreck.. I took over and taught him how to drive in a matter of a few weeks... The most time consuming was teaching him how to parrellel park (the last time I had actually done it was when I took my test) I had to reteach myself how to do it before I could teach him... LOL
I tricked him and made him learn to parrellel park in a 20 foot space... When we got to his driving test and he had 25 feet he whipped the car right in no problem he felt like he had all the room in the world :) Since parellel parking is the first step in the drivers test he took he had alot of confidence to carry into the next part... He passed the test the first try only missed a few points for minor things like not turning on his blinker soon enough and neglecting to turn the wheels properly when parking on a hill...
I don't think he would have ever felt confident enough to take the test had my sister continued to teach him...

I am the oldest child of my family
When my Dad (who drive like a bat out of H*LL) decided it was time to teach me to drive and my Mom saw us heading back to the house with me driving, she immediately decided this was her job.. well she had about the same nerves your mom did, so she asked my uncle & things went well
He became the official family driver instructor for all 4 of us, for his 2 boys & for several neighbors.. he did fine teaching his own kids, but by then, he was broken in by 3 of his neices (including me)
I taught Drew (my son) to drive & it is a nail-bitting experience even when your child is generally conservative with thier driving. I learned to pinch my own arm keep from yelling & screaming at him when I was worried & learned to say "Drew" in a sort of concerned questioning voice so that he knew that I needed to know if he was in as much control of the vehicle as I wanted him to be in & he seemed to not be in at that moment.
Now that he is 19, he has shared with me that he is (1) thankful that I learned not to scream, because this distracted & un-nerved him (2) that he was equally glad when I said "Drew" because it taught him to look for whatever I was questioning and he learned alot from being given enough of a heads-up but also an opportunity to think
Sadly enough.. even though he is a safe driver (at least when I am in the car) and hasn't had any tickets, etc... I still say "Drew" sometimes.... and it usually is because in my view he speeds up to slow down (for example isn't breaking early enough)
I wonder how much of that is driven by being a parent or being worried that one day he will wreck & will be gone (we lost a very close friend at 18 years old due to an accident where she didn't break soon enough & hit a tree)

I was taught to drive when I was 7, and my Dad taught me. I taught my son to drive when he turned 11 and will teach my daughter to drive this summer.
I really hate those who think at 16 you should send them to driver's ed., then hand them the keys to your car.

My mother taught me how to drive. I am 18 now, I have a relaitvely clean driving record (one minor accident that wasn't my fault and a parking ticket for forgetting to feed the meter), and she STILL drives me nuts when I am driving with her despite the fact that I am licensed by the state to drive a car. Some people just can't help it. You just have to try to ignore them.

it made me nervous teaching my kids to drive, especially when they didn't want to take my instruction. or like the methodology that i used. i made them start in a parking lot. practicing parking, steering and parallel parking. learning to use the wheel around the light poles (simulated corner) was spooky for sure. they were frustrated cause they wanted on the road. as i told them on the road is a straight line anyone can do that it is the parking, turning that is hard. My dad taught me, but he started me young and sitting on his lap so that i could learn to steer that way. I wish I would have taught my kids that way, but alas I would have been arrested cause it is now against the law....

No-one. I crash a pushchair, I'm not sure that I want to be in charge of a car!
I don't have any relatives that can drive either!

Both of my parents tried to teach me to drive, everytime we were going out as a family when I was 15 I drove, the rule came that only the adult sitting next to me could correct me, to many drivers. It ended working out fine. But I had to drive interstate , highway, crowded traffic and city before they would let me get my license.
