Oxford English Dictionary, Collins and Chambers are the three top selling dictionaries. Any games involving words though, e.g.countdown or scrabble, the OED is used.

The Oxford English Dictionary is the most reputable but I doubt you will find a copy in most homes. It is more likely that they will have a copy of the Collins English Dictionary (Concise and cheap).
