Any tips?

I wouldnt recommend being uderground at night in such a big city. Taking a cab is worth the extra bucks for a safer route to go where you want. Underground, you have nowhere to run if you feel uncomfortable. It's best to take a cab or a safer route transportation when you are alone.

No Way. Travel with someone. Use the express buses instead of the subway. It may be a little more money but safer. The city buses are safer during late nights because you can request the bus driver to let you off in front of your desired destination. But travel with someone if possible...who knows what may happen after you get off the bus.

I lived there for 3 years and routinely rode the subway alone at all hours (mostly between 116th and Broadway, and Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn which is the Carroll Street stop on the F line). I really only had one creepy experience, very late at night way up in the Bronx outside my normal area, when a guy who was kind of "not all there" seems to have decided I was flirting with him, or something. I just moved to another car that had more people in it, and sat down next to some people who looked sane and normal, and said "Excuse me for sitting down with you but I'm trying to shake this guy whom I don't know who's decided to follow me.)" They were OK about it. Then a conductor or somebody came past, I told him what was happening, he called ahead to the next station and I think police came and quietly ushered the guy off the train.

Use common sense. Try to stick to areas that have a reasonable number of people in them, and where the people are acting like normal, peaceful people going about their business. Keep your wits about you. Don't carry your wallet anyplace a pickpocket could get it. Don't wear tempting-looking jewelry or preferably any jewelry. Wear flat or low-heeled shoes. Look like you know where you're going and what you're doing; don't look vulnerable. If anything creeps you out which probably won't happen often, move to a different car or get off the train. There will be fewer and fewer people around, if it's late, as you get further and further out on the branch lines, so I would not ride out to the end of the line late at night. When it gets really late, there are fewer and fewer trains and you'll have to stand around the station for a really long time so when it's really extremely late, a cab may become worth the cost.

Manhattan is the safest place in the world to travel at any time at night and in the early morning hours.....plenty of other people will be traveling with you most likely if at nite.......it's the most economical way to get around in Manhattan......remember the majority of Manhattanites don't own a car.
Stay within Manhattan boundaries though.......(so don't to to the Bronx)

Yes for the most part. The subway is a big system. But i ride it all the time with zero issues. Would i take it to Gun Hill Road at 3 in the morning? Probabaly not but why would i any way.
At 4am in any city you have to be careful.

I would not use the subway in ANY of the five buroughs at night unless I was armed to the teeth and wearing combat armor. Heck, I didn't like to ride the subway during the DAY, and that was back in the late 70's! No subway for me. That's why I moved to Florida.

Manhattan is pretty safe, so yes, Manhattan is fine, just don't use the subway in the Bronx.

you shouldnt be worried about taking the subway in manhattan at night...... its not as bad as people make it sound.

however, at nights, and weenend nights, they are usualyl doing construction and maintenance in the subways, so its not uncommon to wait a long time for a train, if they are running at all on that particular line, so during the day take the subway, at night, it'll be much faster in cab.....

Yup. Transit police all over. Just be smart. Depending on where you are going it may be faster and cheaper to take a cab.
