Positive thinking works. The first place that it works is within ourselves. This then reflects with the way that we interact with others and apply ourselves. Think of it as a form of Karma. If we are positive we feel better and others feel better around us.

The term positive thinking is used a great deal in psychology and in cognitive behavior therapy in particular. The theory behind it is that negative thoughts and negative core beliefs (like I will be no good at that) can be countered with positive ones (I will be good at that if I try) and even that, with enough work, the brain can "rewire" these thoughts so that you think differently. Most negative thoughts and negative core beliefs happen so quickly that we do not realize we have had them until we look back later at the incident.
This is all good, nothing wrong with positive thinking, except that for some fears and thoughts, there is not a positive thought counter. An example I often use is, if someone is afraid to fly because the plane will crash, you cannot just say, oh, planes never crash, nothing to be afraid of.
Instead, there are times when we have to use 1) logic and facts and 2) evidence the negative action always happens and 3) past experience to counter the fear.
So, for flying on a plane it might be, 1) statistically many more people die in car crashes than air plane crashes; 2) What evidence do you have that THIS airplane will crash; and, 3) Have you been in a plane crash previously?
The goal is to continue countering until you are able to overcome the phobia. Obviously this is not as simple as just countering, but it is part of the process.
A negative attitude however, is always going to be problematic in many areas of your life, your friends, your relationships, your career. And, people just do not like being around someone who is negative all the time. So smile and try a positive "I can" approach and likely you will!!

Its good to try and keep a positive attitude in life because it can help get us through some hard times. But I don't believe that trying to convince yourself you are happy, or good at something you really aren't can help to much. You were talking about being good at things - to me, I would just try and say, "I know this isn't a strength of mine, but it won't kill me to at least try. And the more a person tries, the mroe practice they get at something, and the more practice a person has, the better they will be." Don't tell yourself that you are amazing at something if your aren't, because then you know that you're lying to yourself. Recognizing that you're lying to yourself, will give you room to doubt yourself in the future.

Everyone has a free will to make choices, but also, everything happens for a reason (aka, God's plan). Positive thinking only "sugar coats" reality, and if you are not good at something, just let it be that way, and move on to something you are good at doing. Realistic thinking is the way to go. Look at your problems, weaknesses, strengths, and analyze your situation accordingly. Then you can find where you belong in the scope of your "world" and being in the right place can make your life and the lives of others around you much easier.
Think it over...realistically.

Just like the physical body needs physical food to be healthy, the emotional and spiritual aspects of ourselves need proper nourishment. If you feed your mind on negativity or "junk food" and "poison," it will eventually exhibit itself in your daily activities. If, however, you feed your mind and heart on positive, nourishing things by educating yourself, looking for the good in others and in yourself and by feeding your spiritual need it will improve your mental attitude thus making anything that happens "ok" and keeping you afloat emotionally even during trying times.

positive mental attitude does no harm, your example is very negative and with this negativity you are likely to fail at what you are trying to achieve, as you lose all confidence in your ability to achieve. I enjoy running, cycling and hillwalking, and believe me the PMA does really help especially with scottish weather. Approach every task, job, endeavour with the view you will succeed, you will achieve your goals, you can win. It wont always work but your effort and approach will be 110%
