More psychological than scientific...they feel insecure and the blankie is a warm, fuzzy presence which is also portable, unlike Mommy's lap. Mommy gets tired of holding or carrying Junior, but the blankie is always there. The thumb is a substitute for the breast or bottle...more security. They felt warm and safe and nourished while nursing, so they substitute a thumb, which is the same basic shape in the mouth.

no i do not think so my cousins do and their like 18 or 19 years old and i do not know why children have blankies it is a habit i think

i think its because thats what their used to, being warm inside the womb, and they suck their thumbs in the womb. so its normal and theyre use to doing it.

Scientific? I dunno. But it has been proven that people look for comfort whenever they can, and having a security blanket and thumb sucking are both forms of comfort seeking!
