if they really like you, then breaking up is suppose to hurt.
-or-
You could use the "it's not you, it's me" routine.

Tell him that but DON'T use the phrases "we need to take a break" or "I need some space". These words are often used by someone who is NOT wanting to get back together EVER. Tell him what you just said. Things went a little fast and you want to slow things down a little, keep in touch, hang out once in a while and see how things go. Tell him you're not going to see anyone right now. If he's the right guy, he'll be cool with it. Good luck!!!

That's is exactly what you need after a long relationship some me time. Maybe even unconciously sleep around a little who knows. But in any case you may hurt his feelings but in the long run both of you will be glad that you did. Because you would have eventually began a pattern and possibly lived in misery. Being single is a great thing get to know yourself.

Breaking up is never easy. You created memories from this relationship, these memories will not go away easy. Since you want out, well go for it and do not hurt that person any more than what you already have.

Breaking up is a loss, and should hurt some.
Like pulling tooth, if a breakup is quick and sure,
it won't hurt so long, but a yank here, and tug there,
and putting it off another day, prolongs the pain.
Break up at your door, close it, let it be over.
Don't listen to all the begging and pleading.
Let them write you a letter. Put it off,
tell them that you will talk to them again
on the phone, in X weeks.
Say, "if you love me, you will respect my wishes."
In short, there is no easy way to break up.
That's why it's called 'BREAKING' up.

Unless it's a mutual decision and sometimes even then it's iffy, there's no way to break up with somebody and not hurt them.

well under the circumstances in which you got with him, it will definitely hurt... you used him as your rebound guy. and whether you're a guy or a girl no one wants to be the rebound person
