PLEASE HELP ME. Last month, my computer crashed while I was on the interent. Before it crashed, my desktop background image disappeared and turned black. It said in white lettering something along the lines of --Your computer is infected with a virus--and then I just shut it down quickly. I restarted it and the black background was still there. I went to the Control Panel and clicked Appearences and Themes and then I clicked Change the Desktop Background. Then the display properties popped up and I clicked the desktop tab. I saw the whole scrollbox of various desktop backgrounds windows provides but I couldn't click any of them. They didn't highlight or anything. And also if I try and get an interent image, and i right click and hit SET AS DESKTOP Background, NOTHING HAPPENS. All i can change is the COLOR. The browse button is disabled and so is the position. And the customize desktop button does work but it doesn't help me put an internet image or my own pics. please help

heres what happened
When ur Pc got infected by virus it must have infected ur operating system drive due to which some of ur necessary(has to be display files) must have got corrupted. That must be causing all that stuff to happen.
Heres what u can do,
If you want to go by the easy way then just move your important files and documents to a drive except for your operating system drive and reinstall windows XP using a Windows XP operating system bootable CD or using the windows XP Cd try to repair it if it doesnt then u have to reinstall.
If u want to go by the difficult way then download or buy an antivirus software and then clean the virus from ur drive. Then go to system restore and restore ur system to a time earlier than the time ur PC was infected by the virus

It sounds like your computer is still infected with a virus. Did you clean it?
