They need to be transfused ASAP. I would think they are probably not conscious as they are probably not getting enough oxygen to the brain. They are probably quite short of breath and may have chest pain as they are not getting enough oxygen to their lungs or heart. Are they hemorrhaging from somewhere? This would obviously need to be corrected. They could die if this is not fixed quickly.

No. I would type and cross match 6 units of leukoreduced packed cells and start transfusing immediatly.
I would check everything else in the CBC to see how many platelets are in the blood. Get some oxygen on them.
Find out if the person is on warfarin (coumadin) and find out if they take any prescription blood thinners or aspirin.
I would get a thorough history of any bloody stools, vomiting, or a history of their menstural periods.
I am a cancer RN and we occasionally see pts this low. It is important to get the blood transfusion going as soon as possible.
My dad got that low once and actually preached a sermon that morning. He was as pale as a piece of white paper. He was very short of breath and his heart was pattering away.
I would keep going until I found out where the blood went.

Yes, there will be mental confusion due to lack of oxygenated blood to the brain, shortness of breath, poor or no urine output, definite death if the person is not hospitalized and given treatment immediately
