I was looking to buy a reproduction of a Mark Rothko from this website: http://www.overstockart.com/ropa1.html , and I was wodnering, why did Rothko not name his oil paintings? They all seem to be named by number or year...

Rothko also didn't like to explain the meanings of his works. He did this because he felt words would make it more difficult for the viewer to use their imagination when looking at his work. He wanted the experience of seeing his paintings to be untainted by explanations or descriptions.

Rothko was a brilliant but troubled soul. Most of his work is autobiographical and was found in his studio after he killed himself. This explains why he didn't name each work. His final work of art was to leave his lifeless body in a pool of his own blood in the middle of his NY loft studio. Sad but true.

Why do paintings have to have names why can't they just be co lours on a canvas.
