what does it mean when you there's the word "refillable" written on a highlighter?

How can you refill a highlighter? the word "refillable" is always written on the highlighters, but i never understood what it means

because i've never actually seen refill ink on sale. never. anywhere

You can order refills for highlighters from the manufacturer and occasionally they are sold in stores. However, it is often less cost effective and more of a hassle to refill a highlighter then it is to go to good old Wal-mart and buy a new one.

It means that cheap highlighter that you bought has a refill cartridge available that you can buy for twice what it would cost to throw the used highlighter away and get a new one again.

And that is not even counting the mess and the labor of the refill. It is a great gimmick but I have never seen it make sense.

Exactly as it means- you can refill the ink. Not all highlighters are refillable, just like not all pens are refillable.

I used to have refillable highlighters.You tend to see the extra inks at office supply and stationery stores like Office Depot rather than at say, Wal-Mart.

There are certain highlighters that come with the highlighter being in liquid content with a very short absorber/dispenser at the tip. Such highlighters can be refilled with the ink either by screwing it open or by replacing the ink catridge with another. However, you may note that these highlighters are usually more expensive than your regular highlighter.
