We are the only creature that has a free will. Of course we are accountable for our actions, but destiny is something else.

Do not confuse predestination with God's foreknowledge : there is a very thin dividing line.
Sure, God has a plan for each one but the success of that plan depends on the choices that someone makes. Therefore, to answer your question, we make our our destiny.
This is Biblical : Phi 2:12 "So then, my beloved, even as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;"

We are preprogrammed by our DNA. This even includes many of the decisions we 'think' we make, when in reality we don't have much choice. Just as a rabbit doesn't have much choice about what (s)he is going to eat.
Think of your life like a road. You can swerve a little to the left and a little to the right and that makes you think you have a choice. But unless you come to an intersection which branches off, if you wanted to make a 90 degree turn, you'll end up on the soft shoulder or in someones field and get stuck. That is reality, and I expect a lot of thumb downs from those that can't accept their (and humanities) own limitations. ;-)

first of all, how can you even tell whether you are making your own destiny or following what god intended for you?
If there was something you wanted to achieve and you DID achieve that thing by working VERY hard, would you say you were destined to achive it as god planned or it ACHIEVED because you worked hard.
Since there is no proof that god exists or that he controls everything, it can be said that it was YOU who controlled your destiny because it was YOUR actions that lead to whatever. It is in YOUR control to do or to not do. Every action cannot be regarded as "god's will" because he does not exists or because you can't determine what the initial intention were from "god"

There are no gods. That said, the universe is either determinant or non-determinant. Something is determinant if a cause can only have one effect. Something is non-determinant if a cause can have multiple effects, or if effects can be uncaused. Given findings in quantum physics, it looks like the universe is non-determinant.
If the universe is determinant then all of our actions are fixed based on the current situation. That would remove free will in an absolute sense. If the universe is non-determinant, then perhaps we have free will, though it is still not guarranteed. You can still have a deterministic brain in a non-deterministic universe.
However, we could never know enough about the universe to predict it to any great degree. Therefore, it doesn't really matter about free will in any absolute sense. In a personal sense, we have it. Even if we figure out that the brain is deterministic and we learn how to decode the programming enough to predict what a person will do given any situation, we probably still can't determine the person's environment to enough of an extent to predict a person's actions. Doing so would change that person's environment enough to make such a prediction useless.
So, don't worry about free will.

ah! the ancient debate over pre destination vs divine free will.
Jesus submitted to the will of HIS Father so in a sense his path was layed out and he had to follow. But he chose to follow whatever the Father gave him, even submitting the cruel and unjust that had power of government over him. Yet, the government of God was upon his shoulders for all to receive.
I have come to understand that men become FREE from predestination by claiming the Blood and atonement of christ. But it seems that God has secondary path for all of us to walk in the way of punishment(s) and rewards. Very few men understand how to change their own fate and destiny Even fewer YET! follow God in the path of true righteousness.

God has set certain paths to us millions of year before we were born, and he gave us the ability to think and make decisions...So we choose from different paths that are already set
For example, if decide to go out one day and pass on staying home, that day you might see a friend you havent seen for years. BUt if you had stayed home, you wouldnt be able to see him...This is called fate and destiny, and we should believe in it

In Islam faith contains 6 pillars
1)To believe in Allah
2)His angels
3)His Books
4)His messengers
5)The day of Judgment
6)Divine destiny and that all good and bad is from Allah's wisdom
7)The we will be resurrected after death
Therefore in Islam the 6th pillar answers your question, all good and bad is from Allah as a test as life is a test and Allah will test us through out our lives and he will keep testing us but He will not give us a test that we cannot pass. And the more tests we pass the closer we become to him as he is the most merciful the most kind he loves each and every one of us 70 times more than a loving mother.

I dont blieve in a god, I believe what happens in our life, regarding every aspect is our own path of destiny. We do what we want, we choose which story we are going to live, and although we may not always do it directly, it's how it happens.

I think the big factor is that we have Free Choice. We can choose an option or reject it. Its too simplistic to say that we just walk a pre planned path, I believe we make our own destiny.

Much of our situation is predestened due to our previous life we have a sertain amount of karma. You can change that Karma through purification only. If you act on the will of God to please Him you will not incurr any more Karma. You have free wil to a certain extent. As your Karma is coming to you good and bad you have the choice to act to do Gods will or not. But if you would like to get rid of all of your karma the quickest and easiest way is to chant the Maha Mantra (the mantra for delliverance) Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare One should chant as much as possible at least sixteen times around 108 beads a day to become fully self realized.
