i just went for the first time a month ago, and it goes by faster than you would expect.
my gyno showed me how do a breast exam, and than she did a pap smear. you might feel some pressure but thats it. there is no pain at all. you doc may also want to check your overies, but feels just like the pap smear. the whole thing took like 15 to 20 min. but it felt more like 10. before the actual exam your doc will ask you about your love life and if you have had any strange discharge.
Good Luck, and after this first time you see there is nothing to be nervous about. no woman like this but its a good way of staying healthy.

It shouldn't hurt too much. More often than not it's just uncomfortable instead of painful. There is no reason to be scared or embarrassed. All women have to (or should, anyway) go through this and the doctors know what they are doing and should do anything in their power to make you as comfortable as possible. If they don't, then you might want to just get your legs out of the stirrups and find another doctor.
Just remember to keep your leg and stomach muscles relaxed. The more you tense up, the more uncomfortable you will make the exam for yourself.
Good luck, and stay calm. :)

My moms a gyno and I've worked in her office. It's not that frightening, I've had a pelvic exam though, im not going to lie to you, theyre really weird and uncomfortable but can save you a lot of pain\other problems, plus they aren't too long anyways, but yea, its not that bad, I mean those people (like my mom) do that everyday so their used to it, so theres nothing to be embarassed about.
