(smile) I know you love the little guy, and when we love our pets, we like to give them extra pleasures, such as chocolate. it's great for us, but very very on a toxic level bad for most pets as someone else stated.
If you want to show him how much you love him, cook him up some wonderful pasta , chop him up some fresh fruits and veggies and give him a little tang Orange drink in his water. Now that's showing love to a Bird.
Trust me when i say, i almost killed a Military Macaw once by feeding her chocolate, i didn't know any better, but i know now, had she died it would have been a very costly mistake.I was also guilty of feeding my doggies chocolate. a big no no as well. You live and you learn.

YES!!!!! Chocolate and a variety of other foods and plants are toxic to birds. VERY IMPORTANT -- if you use non-stick cookware in your home, never EVER leave it on the stove to the point of it burning. Several people have had their hearts broken in this manner. There are a huge number of Yahoo Bird Groups who can give you outstanding information on all birds, but if you want the best information about cocktiels, I would suggest selecting a group specifically for that species.

Yes.
The actual toxic ingredient in chocolate is theobromine: an alkaloid similar in effect to coffee but with a slower onset and longer lasting effect.
The problem seems to be that while humans can eat chocolate with no ill effect, animals metabolize it more slowly.
According to Wikipedia:
The first signs of theobromine poisoning are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and increased urination. These can progress to cardiac arrhythmias, epileptic seizures, internal bleeding, heart attacks, and eventually death.
In a nutshell: save the chocolate for humans.

Yes it is true. With any animal chocolate will kill them. Animals can not tolerate caffeine and chocolate is full of it. Here is a bird website about nutrition.....Good Luck and I hope this helps you understand why your boyfriend says this to you.

He is telling you the truth. The cockatiel cannot digest the chocolate. His food does not go directly to his stomach. It goes in an are called the crop. Sorry, not sure of the spelling. From the crop, them to the stomach. Hope this is helpful.

Yes it will kill them. Chocolate is like a poison to most animals like cats and dogs. Don't feed them that and your boyfriend is right.
