Heya,
beside the geographical difference - Austria lies in Central Europe (between Germany & Italy) and Australia is surrounded by the Indian & Pacific ozean -
in a Austria German is spoken - Australia English
Population Austria about 8 million people - Australia 20.5 million people
Other points are that you can find kangaroos, koalas, crocodiles and sharks in Australia, but not in Austria
.
Famous Austrians would be Wolfgang A. Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Sigmund Freud, Nietzsche, Arnold Schwarzenegger...
Famous Australians (sorry don't know too many of them) Patrick White, Kylie Minogue, Nicole Kidman...
Best regards from Austria!

Austria is in middle europ and Austrialia is huge continent in the Pacific. Austria is in the middle of the Alps. There are many big mountains, without desert like in Australia. Also the clima is different. Austria has a moderate climate and Australia has a subtropical clima. In Australia live the aborigines and in Austria we don´t have oroginal inhabitants. The flag o Austria is red-white red and the Austrailian one is mix from the british flag and stars. Australia has the ocean and Austria just has some lakes. In Austria we speak German which is also germanic language like English which is spoken in Australia. Last but not least I libe in Austria!!!

As and Austrian living in the US at the moment I have to put some things right!
First of all, THANK YOU to all the people out there who knew the correct answer. I face the same question almost every day and I have started to wonder what you people learn in geography?
Both names have the same latin origin (auster), meaning "south".
However, the german word "Oesterreich" (Oester - standing for east, and Reich - standing for empire) means 'country in the east'.
The name Australia is derived from the Latin Australis, meaning "of the South"
And one more thing:
Beethoven is actually not Austrian. He might have died in Vienna, but he was born in Bonn/Germany. So that makes him German. But all the other guys are ours! And a few more.
