High blood pressure can be either essential (or primary) hypertension and secondary hypertension.
In essential hypertension basic causes or underlying defects are not always known but certain associations have been recognized. For example, essential hypertension develops only in groups or societies that have a fairly high intake of salt, exceeding 5.8 grams daily. In fact, salt intake may be a particularly important factor in relation to essential hypertension in several situations. Thus, excess salt may be involved in the hypertension that is associated with advancing age, African American background, obesity, hereditary (genetic) susceptibility, and kidney failure (renal insufficiency).Genetic factors are thought to play a prominent role in the development of essential hypertension but the genes for hypertension have not yet been identified. The vast majority of patients with essential hypertension have in common a particular abnormality of the arteries. This increased peripheral arteriolar stiffness is present in those individuals whose essential hypertension is associated with genetic factors, obesity, lack of exercise, overuse of salt, and aging.
Secondary hypertension hypertension is secondary to (caused by) a specific disorder of a particular organ or blood vessel, such as the kidney, adrenal gland, or aortic artery of the heart.
When you are emotionally excited - angry, excited, surprised, scared, etc. blood presure can increase. When you are exhausted or exerting much effort it can increase the blood pressure. When you are under tensionor in pain it can increase as well.
There is also such thing called "white coat syndrome" as a reaction to seeing a doctor or a medical worker. Error in the reading or miscalibration of measuring instrument, incorrect timing are amongst some of other causes.♥

Cause
Many different factors can cause high blood pressure, including obesity; drinking three or more alcoholic beverages a day; high salt intake; aging; a sedentary lifestyle; stress; low potassium, magnesium, and calcium intake; and resistance to insulin. 2, 3
Primary, or essential, high blood pressure accounts for 95% of all cases of hypertension. 4 Secondary high blood pressure, which is caused by another disease or medication, is less common.
Elevated blood pressure readings may not always mean that you have high blood pressure. For some people, just being in a medical setting causes their blood pressure to rise. This is called white-coat hypertension.

Unfortunately, the high blood preasure is hereditary.I`ll give you an example: my grandmother and my mother were hypertenses. For that reason, take the medication your doctor give you and practise sports you like most. NO SALT IN THE MEALS and without STRESS in your life.
Good luck :-)

Many factors come into play. Family history, over weight, some prescriptions, lack of exercise, excessive sodium intake are just a few.
Your Doctor, Web MD and the web are good resources to check

High blood pressure is the result of narrowing of the arteries. This can be caused by too high of cholesterol (fat in the arteries) high salt intake and Calcium in the arteries. To reduce your blood pressure you can take medication which could include a water pill to help eliminate the toxins and keep the kidneys working well. Weight, stress and smoking are big factors of high blood pressure. A stress test is more to determine how your heart functions under stress .

From what I've witnessed in my friends and loved ones who suffer from this malady, lack of exercise, bad diet habits (junk food and alcohol) and genetic disposition.
