I think it is mainly peer recognition and they think it is cool at the time when they are young and don't consider the risk of complications and also think these things only happen to others.
Every generation has had their own fads and done silly things, as a way of rebelling against authority or attempting to show their individuality.
Pierced ears are fine but beyond that I think most guys over 21 think it makes a girl look like a tramp and all the girls I have met with pierced tongues like sucking dick.

okay lets get this straight shall we... me being a 'young girl' of 18... i have 16piercings... both nipples, 2in navel, 4in ear, 6staple bars in my back to create a back corset piercing, clitoral hood and one cleavage piercing... my breast havent fallen off or needed to be cut off, i have contracted no infections, i have no brain absesses... jesus i mean come on... surely with the high number of piercings i have i should have something gone wrong???
these are scare stories... yeah if you go to a crappy piercist you will face a lot of risks but a good piercist really cares about their job...
i guess what u wana know is why i (as a young girl) want to risk scarring ect... well piercing is a way of expression... i do not get piercst because it is fashionable or 'cool'. i do it because i believe i have the choice to create my body how i want it... my body, my skin is a blank canvas for me to play with... my mum asked me why i got my back pierced as i will face a degree of scarring when i take it out... its not that i dont care... but i have weighed the pros and cons and i would rather have scarring than b scared to live my life... piercing done in the right parlour with the right intention is beautiful and also helps a person push their boundaries... i have heightened my pain threashold greatly since i started getting pierced and it is all through persistance and exploration throught body and mind...
so there that has touched on why a young girl does such 'stupid things'

Sounds like a simple question, but it's really quite complex. Let's assume we're talking USA and similar societies.

Why do women wear impractical high heel shoes, skirts when it's not really warm out and spend hours (and dollars) on makeup and hair care?

It would seem that for many (not all) females self-worth is caught up in meeting standards of perceived attractiveness to males and peer expectations from other females.

Some girls don't have either the natural looks (face shape. et. al), inclination, or resources to fit the standard model of appearance. Their alternative is to go with the somewhat counter culture "rebel" look of the pierced look, often with corresponding attire.

For the young in Western cultures with advance medical care and technology, disease and death are often abstract concepts, with low probability of affecting them. For those young girls the stress and implications, both real and perceived, of dealing with day to day social pressures far outweighs the perceived risk of
piercing induced health issues.

Because They Know The Risks, But They Also Know What They Want To Do. I'm Piercing My Lip Next Month. The Risks Are Huge If I Screw Up And Forget To Clean It, Ect. But Its What I Want. Ergo. I'm Doing It. They Arnt Stupid For Wanting To Pierce Things. But Stupid For Not Caring For It Properly... Its A Commitment Most People Cant Make.

While the news story is tragic, it is all about perspective. I'm sure when you were young you did things that people older than you thought were "stupid". Also, if done correctly and taken care of, most tattoos and piercings are harmless.

This is the way this generation has chosen to show their individuality.

My Mom remembers when girls having their ears pierced was considered stupid.

You do know that boys get piercings too right....

I always wonder about the same thing...Why would people in general pierce their lips or noses or breasts? Why should I but a metal thingy in my body, and cause myself pain, not to mention the infections

I agree with Amaranth everyone at Woodstock didn't think they were doing anything 'bad.' But, many now regret. Kids regret so many things they di as kids when they grow up.
