I just want to say this.......look into the BARF diet. All the people here that say it is bad, or "feed your dog cooked food" don't know what they are talking about. As for the guy who said dogs should not eat meat........well a canine is a canine. Back in the days, they did not have dog food as we know it. All dogs were feed raw meats. Look for the book : The BARF Diet: Raw Feeding for Dogs and Cats Using Evolutionary Principles by Dr. Ian Billinghurst. This will introduce you to the BARF diet.

Good Luck!

Check out B-Naturals (google search for it). There are recipes in the newsletters. Lew Olson (owner of the company) also has a raw feeding book available. She's a great resource! There are also raw feeding groups on Yahoo Groups - do a search and see if you can find on in your state. Yes, you can get the necessary stuff at a grocery store but I will tell you from experience that it can be expensive. Also, check out the pages for BRAVO dog food - they have great information on their raw diets. I have a 65 pound rottweiler that eats a raw diet (Bravo) and I have to supplement the food with a digestive enzyme, fish oil and pro-biotics. I spend approximately $100 per month feeding one dog, NOT including the supplements - that is ONLY for the Bravo raw dog food. Bravo can be costly - it is a finely ground mix of muscle meat, organ meat, bones and some veggies - I pay about $20 for a 10 pound roll, or chub, of food - which lasts me 6 1/2 days. Pros - you know exactly what you are feeding your dog, your dog will be much healthier (but should still regularly see the vet) Cons - it can be expensive, some dogs won't touch raw food, can be a pain in the butt to store and prepare the food (I have a freezer that specifically contains dog food!), can sometimes be hard to find a retailer for prepared foods (which is what I recommend for newbies).

Many people feed the Barf {bones and raw food) diet.I belong to a Labrador board, and there are about 8 people who swear by it.They say they will never use processed foods again.I would suggest you do a search on the barf diet, and get as much info as you can on what the proper items to feed are,and in what amount.I know they also use flax, and other foods to be sure the dog gets the proper mix of vitamins, minerals, omega fatty acids, etc. It's not easy compared to throwing down a bowl of food, but with proper research on what to feed, and proper handling instructions,it is safe and healthy for your dog.

Yes, you can feed your dog a raw diet even though I don't. It is called the barf diet (bones and raw food) and a lot of people in the ABDA feed their dogs this diet. The internet has a lot of information about the barf diet. Remember never feed the dog cooked bones because they splinter.

I feed mine raw diet mixed into high quality dry food
( Royal Canin ).
I grind equal parts of kidney, heart and tripe in my grinder, mix it together, put into tubs in the freezer and use when needed.
I have 3 dogs, all female: a 13 year old Papillon, a 11 yr old
Papillon and a 3.5 yr old Doberman. None has ever been ill, none have worms or diarrhia.

I knew someone who would feed their dogs raw meat. It depends on the size of your dog of course. If the dog is small, about 25lbs, I'de say it was safe to feed it about a hand full of raw meat, mixed with some dry food. If it is a large dog like a german shepherd, use two hands ful with a little dry food....If you dont want to use dry dog food you can try using a cooked chopped egg, or rice. If you want you can feed it ground beef and one chicken thigh. You don't need to cut the thigh up, because the dog will do it, itself. A neck would be fine as long as its not too long, you may want to cut it in half. If you plan on feeding it ribs, I would cut the ribs apart and leave about 2 or 3 in the dog bowl. Here is a useful website on raw diets for dogs... You can take a look if you would like...http://members.shaw.ca/naturalpaws/rawdiet-dogs.htm
And here is a chart that can help you deside a safe amount to give to your dog. http://www.phouka.com/dogs/dog_amount.html and here is a calculator to determine the amount by your dogs weight and activity level...http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/sampleraw.htm#calculator
I hope this helps you, and good luck.

dogs can not process raw meat a vet told me. a coyote will eat a animal whole and the skin/hair will protect his digestive system from bones. any meat you give your dog should be cooked. there are many nasty things in meat these days and your putting your dog at great risk by feeding him raw meat. consult with your vet. hope this helps

It is very dangerous--human health risk and health risk to your dog to feed a raw diet. Survival of the fittest is what takes place in the wild-not exactly what you want to do with your pet. I know holitic vets who still refuse to promote raw diets.

I dont give ANY raw food to my dog...
I do give COOKED chicken or pork and I just take out the bones...because someone made me realize...that dog food is human food...but dried up.... dog food didnt exist before....its just an industry that makes lots of money =/.....for sure its easier to feed them dog food...

I know a woman who used to feed her dog ONLY cooked bone marrow...I have no idea how she does it...because for sure you cant just give the bones like that to them because they are soft (for dogs) and can splinter in their digestive system...im telling you this because...her dog got hit hard by a car...and the dog didnt move but the car went backward lol...and her dog--german shepperd--lived till 18!!!!!!!

for sure there are things you cant give to your dog...chocolate (they can die from it), chewing gum (dont laugh...i know someone who used to do that), ice cream, sweets ( a lot of dogs became blind because the owners treat them too often with sweet stuff... )

raw meat is a source where bacteria multiply...(taking a class about microorganisms lol)...and some of these bacteria can be very bad for not only us but the dog too...so cooking the food is way safer...

best of luck! :)
