Have to admit I don't like the fish I have tried in England so far. Heard a funny story though and don't promise it's true but here goes.

The Brits have always bought a lot of cod from Iceland for their famous fish and chips. In the old days, before the ships were equipped with proper freezers and they hadn't thought of exporting fresh fish by airplanes, of course the fish wasn't very fresh when it finally arrived in the shops in England. As they didn't know any better, this not so fresh fish became very popular.
Later, when all fishing boats were equipped with good freezers nd they started putting the fish directly on ice and it reached the fish shops a lot sooner than before the English complained about the fish and said it didn't taste good! They didn't like the fresh fish!

I love fish and chips made in Iceland with fresh fish and I'm sure there are some chip shops there that serve good fish, I just haven't found them yet.

(Damn I'm hungry now)

I do. I might have it tonight actually. Fish, chips, mushy peas and a can of Coke. Although you should point out you can get fantastic fish suppers in Scotland and Wales too (I don't know about N. Ireland).

Mmmm! Yes! Battered fish and proper chip shop chips (NOT frozen!) Salt and vinigar. All it needs to be perfect is proper mushy peas.

I love it!!

We moved house recently and I was really worried about leaving our local chippy because we were on first name terms and I loved their food. I needn't have worried, our new local fish and chip shop is even better and they already know our order!!

The good old English. I find they leave the roof of my mouth feeling as though it was coated with mutton fat. I should take more vinegar with them.

Everybody, it seems - me included. Incidentally, the story about not-so-fresh fish is total rubbish.

I like Skipper's... I dip the fish in their cocktail sauce, the fries in their tartar sauce.
