If a wire or a coil of wire passes through a magnetic field - electrons flow through the wire. The most basic of generators is a magnet on a spindle with coils either side. The magnet turns and creates a varying magnetic field and so electrons flow through the coils and the generator produces electricity. Controlling the speed of the generator used to be by use of a governor - a device that increased the load the faster it went - these days - computers can control a generator. You could have a computer control the diesel input to the engine to maintain the generator at a constant speed and therefore the voltage. Experiments are being done in to making bio-diesel. the oil comes from organic sources - rape seed oil or sunflower oil and that is then given more energy using methane gas. The methane can be made using bacterial fermentation of animal waste or even human waste in sewage farms. The methane is used to give the vegetable oil more energy - and the catalyst is caustic soda. If you want to experiment a little most small electric motors will work just as well as a generator.

A generator produces electricity by passing a magnetic field through a coil of wire (or vice -versa). The amount of electrical energy produced depends on the number of wires in the coil, the strength of the magnetic field and the speed that the coil passes through the magnetic field. In reality many coils of wire are used and for large generators the magnetic field is made with an electromagnet. Increasing any of the three factors will increase the amount of electrical energy produced.

A generator is usually driven by water or steam or wind....

When driven by water it turns a coil in an intense magnetic field. As the coil cuts through the magnatic field it generates ac current. You control this power by transferring it into a wooden barrel and putting the lid on when the barrel is full. Best use old whisky barrels for alcohol flavoured current......
