It sounds like the tumor has spread to other places and it would do not good to remove it.
Make your dog comfortable for as long as you can and when he is no longer comfortable have him put to sleep.
It is very hard to do but it is the kindest thing you can do for him.
I am sorry for what you are going through cancer is very hard in animals.
I just lost a doberman about 6 months ago he was only 5 years old.

I am so sorry about this. I would seek a second opinion with another veterinarian - call and ask for a consult about cancer and bring all the test results you can. You may hear something different from another person. In addition, maybe you can try the below link to locate a holistic vet in Kansas (my test search showed a number of holistic vets in the state). Holistic medicine for animals has really taken off in the past few years (I even got my dog acupuncture for allergies after steroids - the common treatment - weren't working out). Maybe there are alternative treatments you can try for cancer. Best of luck to you all. lisa

Hi Preston. I had a 9 year old Siberian Husky that died of cancer about 6 months ago. I know how hard this must be for you and your dog.
You are going to get mixed responses on here from people, because everyone has their own opinions (which is great). You are the only one who can really decide what is best for your dog. My opinion is, if she is happy, eating, drinking, urinating, defecating, etc and doesn't seem to be in any pain, just love her, comfort her, and adore her until she gets to be in too much pain. Then you should probably euthanize her.
I'm sorry to hear about your dog and I'll put you both in my prayers tonight.

I feel so badly for you and your beloved dog. I know that bone cancer can be exceedingly painful in human beings, and I would think that it would be the same for any living creature.
It is very difficult to make the decision to have a beloved pet, and family member put to sleep; but you really have to look into your own heart to think about your dogs pain and suffering.
I would say that you will need to make that decision soon, as the cancer sounds as if it is too advanced for the removal of the tumor to help the situation.
If your dog is still eating, that is a sign of the tenacity of the spirit the part of all living creatures that makes life continue. I personally, would not be comfortable prolonging the life of a beloved animal of mine that had cancer and a draining wound.
You may need to spend some quiet time with your dog, and let him know that you love him and always will, but that it is okay for him to go to the Rainbow Bridge and that you will be with him until the end.
I actually had to do this with a dog that I owned for seventeen years, and she was having problems with heart failure and I and other family members had to talk to her and tell her that we would be fine, we would miss her; but it was okay for her to go and she did not have to struggle any longer.
She actually passed away peacefully at home, with those she loved. This actually occurred within minutes of all of us talking to her, and in essence; saying our goodbyes.
May God bless you and help you through this difficult time. My prayers to you and your beloved dog.

So sorry...
Lose of weight is one of the signs that the dog is loosing the battle. Dogs have great pain tolerance and probably IS in pain.
other signs to watch for and to know when "the time has come" are: increased sleep habits, decreased eating habits, loss of bodily functions in the home, hiding or any other change in routine behavior.
Humanely euthanizing is so much better than suffering. Your vet can also assist you in making this decision by letting you know his quality of life is no longer there. The decision is always yours and they can not make that decision for you, but they can let you know it may be time to at least consider it.

i think you should put your dog down...... i'm so sorry for you. your dog should be put down because letting the dog live is so sad. I mean watching it in pain and struggling until it's last moment. Being put down will end your dos misery and he will at least have his last moments with him in your arms as he gets the shot. Plus if you do give him more surgeries he will be in more pain. I bet if your dog could talk he would want you to be with him as he gets his shot.... his last pain... i know that nothing will ever raplace your comapnion but this is for the best. Time takes more control of you then yourself... and it is time to let your dog go... I hope you make the wise choice and get your dog put down from his misery. Your dog will appreciate it's last minutes and as he takes his last breath do not cry, but start talking to him about how much you will miss him, if you cry your dog will panic, but using a soothing voice to say goodbye, will be your dogs last minutes of hearing you tell him about how you miss him so... I am so sorry....

I'd say since something similar happened to my dog to put him/her down. Even if it might not seem like it your dog is most likey going through some pain and it will only become wrost and so putting your dog down would be the best choice instead of seeing him/her fading away

I feel so sad for you that your loyal companion is so ill. But I think it would be better to let him go then there is no pain when you know with cancer there will be pain later. And its so hard to take care of an ill pet, if he would get better it's fine but really hard when they won't. Why put yourself through that or him either.?

Put him down and it will end his suffering and will stop your heartache from seeing his suffering. But then again I dont believe in euthanasia except for the two asian dudes that do the lip syncing video of the backstreet boys.. i like those
