flashrtp and jim ex marine offi have the correct answer. Army personnel are required to uncover while indoors, except when under arms. If you carry a weapon (loaded or not), you are required to remain covered.

The only other exception is when the commander requires headgear indoors.

You should not wear hats indoors unless instructed to do so or the building (e.g hall) is being used for a ceremony where full dress is needed.

In messes you NEVER wear a hat. In some countries you have to pay up when you do. High ranking officers and command NCO's should leave their hat in the foyer to warn others of their presence. (in some countries)

A gentleman (or a soldier) NEVER wears a hat indoors, unless he/she is on duty, with orders to stand on guard, for example. The hat is stowed under your left arm and removed with the right hand, including when greeting a lady.

under arms and when you are directed as part of a ceremony (color/honor guard is an example). MPs are an example of underarms. They always have their weapons, so they frequently wear them indoors.
