I have 2 small dogs 8lbs. or so each, one yorkie-poo(14 months old) and one malti-poo(8 months old) that won't potty train. I think I have tried every avenue there is and am just totally frustrated now. Does anyone have any ideas or techniques they have found successful? Next step is going to be me locking them in crates for a few days only letting them out to go outside to the bathroom then back in crates...

Sound like they have bad habits, and that will take some work...and a lot of supervision to solve. Alway supervise, be ready to correct them with a "NO" and take them out frequently. Also... you may need to replace carpets that have been damaged.. if that smell is still there, it tells them, that is the spot to go.

Crate training is ideal, but not the way you make it sound. The crate is a safe, happy place where your puppy can stay when you are not watching him/her. If your puppies will not potty train, you may not be cleaning up accidents well enough, or giving them chances to go outside often enough. Toy breeds need to go out more often that larger dogs, and it is easier to miss accidents (due to the small volume) thus making them much harder to train. Please consult a professional trainer for assistance since you obviously are already at the edge of your patience.

With small dogs especially you have to be diligent as they don’t have the holding capacity of a larger dog. Take them out every couple of hours, after play sessions and after eating. It might help if you take some of their mess (either some of the feces, or a paper soaked in urine) so they can get the idea that relieving themselves outside is correct and when they go outside praise them.

You may need to get rid of the scent of their urine or feces from inside the house, although you might not smell it, they can. Dogs like to go where they’ve been before; it’s a form of marking their territory. There are many products out there that can eliminate the odor, but I usually use a white vinegar solution (the vinegar odor dissipates in a couple of hours.

try crate training, just leave your puppies in a little cage, and put some news papers, or something with edges, because puppies will know not to waste in their home. So make sure you have something out they can pee/poop on. Its as easy as 123. And maybe leave some toys there, and when your taking them out of the cage, make sure they go in the back yard first. And give them a treat everytime they go outside :] then they'll know, thats where they have to go.

Walk them frequently and they will expend their energy and get their potty time too. If you are busy and have a fenced yard, then put them outside. Putting them in crates is not the way to go unless you are leaving the house. If you take them outside they will get the idea. Also, if one of them makes a mistake; immediately take both outside.

Sometimes, a dog will show their displeasure with you and do the one thing that they know you can't stand - have an accident. You don't say how long you are expecting them to hold themselves? The best is to spend the time and watch them so you know their behavior of when they have to go and take them out often , give praise and treat so they know that if they go outside they are rewarded. Are you spending enough quality time with them both and individually - they are so smart - don't underestimate them - normally dogs have to go after eating - what are your feeding habits with them ? Perhaps that needs to be adjusted - patience patience when it comes to training

We crate trained my mutt, best thing we ever did. She goes in her house when we leave and comes out when we return. We let her out to potty about a zillion times a day too.

If one dog is guilty don't lock both up. Here's what I do. If you use puppy pads or paper for inside go outside and get a handful of grass leaves etc. and put them on the paper. This will remind them of outdoors where they are supposed to pee.

First you have to understand that it is not their fault...it's yours...you must be patient and vigilant with them...THEIR CRATE IS NOT TO USED AS PUNISHMENT!!! It is their safe and happy place of their very own...if you use the crate for bad things...they won't go in there.

Any time they eat or drink, play, sniff, circle, or wake up they have to go outside. You have to pay attention!
