The older G series cameras were very good in their time. (I still own the G3)
However, I am a bit disappointed by the release of the new G7.
Its lens is much slower than the older G series..
It has a starting aperture of f2.8-f4.1
the older models had f2.0-f3.0.
They also cut out the RAW in the new model...and the flip out & twist LCD!!!
The G7 is the top of the compact range, so it's obviously meant to be better (it has 6X stabilised optical versus 4X optical) plus a slightly better LCD...and the new Digic III processor.
If price is no deterrent then get the G7.
The G7 is a bit of a disappointment...to users of RAW etc...but to someone who has never owned a G series camera before, then it would be ok.
I have not read any reviews of it yet, as it's too new...so I would wait (for the reviews) to see how it performs.

Basically G7 has better telezoom (35-210mm vs. 35-140mm for A640) and has image stabilization, which is practically where the extra money goes to. Depending on your needs, for example, if you do a lot of close-ups, like using telezoom to shoot from a distance (imagine you are trying to get a picture of a little bird on the tree), or doing a macro of a tiny flower, then definitely pay for the G7 (the image stabilization will help macro, even though A640 can do the same 1cm focal distance). Otherwise, go for the A640.

I have the Powershot G6 and like it a lot. I think the G7 has a bit slower lens and no raw capability.
Go to dpreview.com and you can see the specs and compare them side by side.
Either one would be a good camera.
