And what do you want?

I would really like a beach front condo in Florida and a nice vintage Mercedes to drive around....

You can't always get what you want..... best they start learning that.

The 10 and 12 year olds can go do some work for the neighbors to earn the money themselves. The little ones are going to grow out of them so fast, I wouldn't buy them for them. Maybe try the imitation uggs. Or, let them do some work around the house to earn as much as they can toward them. You be the judge of whether or not they worked hard enough to earn them. Don't buy name brand stuff for your kids just because they want them. Unless it's for Christmas or birthdays.

My opinion, NO. i am a recently retired elem teacher and mother of 2. The strategy we used was we will give you enough money to buy and average priced boot that will accomplish the same thing and you will have to come up with the rest.Or I did something I loved when my kids were older, but might work with young ones. You have to have a very strong backbone for this one. Remember, mine were in mid-high school age. In about 1990's, I gave them each $50 a month and wouldn't give them one penny more ever ever ever. They had to buy everything out of this money, clothes, deoderant, soccer shoes, shampoo, clothes, boots, socks, underwear, movie tickets anything except food and heat etc. It was one of the greatest experiences of their lives. At first they jumped for joy, but after the first month, they just went along, and then started figuring out how to budget. Mind you, my 2 knew I meant what i said and i said what I meant. The parent must have that mule type attitude, you can never break the rules. My poor daughter so sweet and about 16, she saved almost all of her money for almost a whole year to buy school clothes for the next school year. We went to a big city mall and she headed right for GAP or a big name store. She had over $350. It was gone when we walked out. I never said a word about what she bought. Just was quiet and let her do her thing. She got like 2 tops and a sweater. When we walked out of the store she started bawling. I looked at her, she is shy, and asked: what is wrong ? She babbled about saving for so long and and and .... I asked her if she wanted to go right back in and refund them ? This was extremely hard for her,but she chose to do it. Probably taught her one of the best life long lessons of her life. We used to fight all the time because she would look at the brand name first and i would look at the price tag. When she had her own $50, I could smile and say yes to anything she liked and no arguements. She began shoppping all the clearance racks she would not look at before and then went on to be a 2nd hand junkie and still is at age 27. She loves it and now has a baby, off they go to the second hand store, and saving the rest for their house down payment :)

I'm sorry to use this argument, but women are dying because they can't afford an operation that costs $2.00 in India. Children are dying because they don't have a medication that costs less than fifty cents. And you are asking us whether you should spend 500$ on some shoes? You could save lives with that money and explain to your children what they are doing by deciding to live with cheaper shoes. I think they would learn a lot if you did that.

um, let me think, no!!!. just because kids want something doesn't mean you run out and get it right away. $500 for 5 five pairs of shoes. are you crazy. unless you're a millionare, i would say no way. if they want them so bad, tell them to earn the money to pay for them. next time, they will respect you more when asking for things. what's wrong with some nice $20 shoes from Payless.
also-learn how to spell. it's expensive

Target sells Ugg look-a-likes. They aren't multi-colored. There's tan ones and pink ones, in toddler sizes and girl sizes. They aren't the real thing but you would save a lot of money if you got those ones for them instead.

absolutely not! It is your job to set limits. Let them know that what they want is very expensive and that you can not afford it. You do not give children everything they want just because they want it. The older kids should be doing something to earn money for themselves, such as dog walking, weeding for a neighbor, etc. If they want to spend all their money on junk, fine. Or they can save it for stuff they want....such as uggs.

I've heard of those 'uggs' girls crave. You can get them at about $80 a pair on sale. I won't buy for my girls if I had one because in my opinion those should be called "ugglies".
