My dogs got in a fight and one got a puncture would on the top of her head. We took her to the vet and they put one stiitch in it to close it up a little but would still leave it open enough to drain. She's on antibiotics and antiinflammatories. This happened Tuesday night. It's still oozing pus and it stinks. How long should it be before it closes over and stops oozing> I'm not sure if she pawed at it and tore a scab off or not. Just wondering if it's normal to still be oozing 4 days after the injury occurred.

It's the weekend and the vet's off or I would call. They have an emergency line for life-threatening emergencies but I don't think this qualifies so doubt if they'd reply.

It must still have some foreign body in it. Could be very very small. The wound probably needs to be irrigated with some distilled water and just patted dry. You need to make sure all the pus drains, that'll speed up the healing time. Before you irrigate, put a very warm cloth over the area first for about 5 minutes. That'll make it all easier.

You should definitely call the vet just to make sure. If the pus has a smell, it is a sign of infection. Some wounds take a few weeks to heal (especially if the wound is deep). You might want to think about getting her a plastic cone so that she can't reach the wound with her paws in case she accidentally cut the stitch or makes the wound worse.

Oozing, maybe, but not oozing pus. You need to go back to your vet as soon as you can. Obviously the antibiotics are not getting to that bacteria. Your vet may need to switch you to a different antibiotic.

I would schedule a trip to the vet for a followup, or at least call to tell them of the situation. Sounds like the infection's still active, or she did something to aggravate it. You might have to take her in to have the wound cleaned out. Hope this info helped.

You should call the vet, asap. This wound probably needs to be attended to before it becomes any worse. They may need to give you some stronger antibiotics. good luck and God bless
