The US call their Marines leathernecks but the UK call their Royal Marines bootnecks because in the olden days their collars were made from leather(the same leather they used to make their boots out of)they did this because the Marines could keep their necks straight when at attention but it rubbed against their neck which is where the expression red neck came from.

US:leathernecks
UK:bootnecks

I have never heard them called boot necks leather necks yes boot no. They are called leather necks because back in the day there uniform had a leather collar which served as a guard against sword cuts to the throat. The dress uniform I think still has this kind of collar.

They are called bootnecks because they used to use bootlaces to tie their dogtags around their necks.
Leather necks are U.S marines.

According to my Dad ( a gunny sargeant in the U.S.Marines/20 years+)
the correct term is Leatherneck, it came from thier uniform history. They used to wear a leather 'collar' type device as part of the field armor that prevented (in theory) decapitations or neck wounds.
