I am considering UnderArmor, Land's End ThermaSkin, Cuddle Duds, and L.L. Bean's PolarTec.

It all depends on what you are planning to do outside in the cold. If you just want to stay warm, get a cotton type undergarment, the LandsEnd type stuff. If you will be exercising and/or working, meaning there is a potential for you to sweat, go with the UnderArmour because it doesn't absorb the sweat but wicks it away from your body to stay dry. The worst thing that can happen to you in the cold is to get wet (sweat soaken cotton) and therefore get really cold. Same with socks, wear a synthetic sock (nylon) and a wool sock rather than a cotton sock.

Remember the mantra of the great north, cotton kills. Stick with polypropylene long underware, fleece clothing and the ultra-hybrid parka's,headware and gloves. Footware must be moisture wicking and insulated, choosing amongst the 150 brands that claim they are the best. Stay dry my friend.
It's hard not to get caught up in the marketing BS in this industry. Just keep in mind higher percentages of the known "wicker's" is better than lower percentages plus some magic ingredient that is specific to the brand.

Long Under-ware made with Polypropylene

Tops, bottoms, socks, and gloves! Light weight, breaths, wicks moisture away from your body so-- you stay dry and warm. Also you can find head gear (caps etc... lined with the stuff).

Check full service sporting good stores for availability.
