You can use temporary dye that lasts up to 1-2 washes or a semi-permanent that lasts from 6-8 weeks. It seems like a temp color will work well since you just want to see how it will look. I would try a nice chocolate brown, but be careful, when I was in school for hair, some1 with blond hair temp'd their hair with like an ash brown and it wouldn't come out till the point where she had to color it permanent, but her hair was all blond so I don't think you have anything to worry about. Hope I helped and good luck!

There is no such thing as "hair dye". Dye is used on fabric and leather -- not hair. If you have used a permanent hair colour, you can't wash it out. That contains bleach and it has made a permanent chemical change to the structure of the hair, and that can never be reversed. You can cover it up with a darker colour (but still a chemical change) or remove the artificial pigments leaving just bleached hair. This can make your hair about 2-3 levels lighter in shade. If you used a semi-permanent colour, it will fade away slowly so that most of it will not be seen in a couple of weeks. A faint stain will remain forever, until you cut that portion off. It works differently than a tint and you cannot easily remove semi- colours. You can only add some colour to what already exists; you cannot make it lighter. If you used a temporary rinse, it washes out in the next shampoo. These only sit on the outside of the hair, there is no permanent chemical change and no lasting effects. These come in mousse or liquid form; they only add a bit of colour and cannot make your hair lighter or very dark. Anything you do can have an effect on your hair. It all depends on what you mean by "bad effect". Sometimes there is a little bit of damage that you tolerate because of the colour you get, but if you want to make a change, certainly there has to be some kind of "damage" along the way. If you want no damage at all, then do NOTHING at all to your hair, not even shampoo. Since you know nothing about hair colouring at all, you had best have your consultation [no charge at most salons] with a qualified professional hair colourist who will be able to do a proper analysis of your hair and skin tones, and tell you what you need to do to get the shade you desire. They will also tell you how to look after coloured hair, and how to get rid of it when you change your mind. You need all these facts because some of these things you are considering are permanent, and you may not want that.

You can but several different brands of hair dye at drug stores that will wash out in less than a month, though a few don't wash all the way out. I don't think that the brand makes much of a difference unless you have a preference, but I have used multiple cheap brands and have never had a problem. If you are not sure that you want to keep the dark brown for a month or so, a few brands sell a dye that washes out in 3-5 washes, but they don't come in very many colors. I like Clairol best.

RE:
wash out hair dye?
I have blonde brown color treated hair and am interested in going all dark brown, a little darker than my natural color. I have dark eyes and medium skin, but want to use a wash out color before going to a salon to permanently do it. If I don't like the color when it washes out will it turn to...

if you have blonde hair that will naturally get bleached by the particular sun in the summer. There was this guy in my class who also had golden blonde hair that has been a medium brown near the bottom. When he came back to university after summer vacation, it was nearly platinum blonde!

Exactly why is everyone with blond, why aren't you just have jet black tresses with some blonde or blonde curly hair with some jet black hair. Now you don't have to choose.
