It is a reference to the movie Gaslight, a classic film Noir, which i myself have yet to see. As to the phrase, I do not know where it first appeared on film. Chances are that it was used in teh 80's TV series Remington Steele,W/ Pierce Brosnan, as the series was full of film references

The premise of the film if i recall, is that a husband wants out of his marriage, and decides to convince his wife that she is crazy, and driver her to suicide.

After the film came out it became a verb, i.e. Gaslighting, meaning: to drive one crazy, or make them believe themselves crazy.

yes, i can't remember that movie either. but the saying refers to attempting to pull on over on somebody but i don't really know why that would have anything to do with gaslight...
