In Australia, they even have commercials encouraging people not to leave their dogs in the car, let alone kids!!!
Tell you a true story: Boy, three years old, left in car. Boy locked doors, un-did the hand brakes, car starts to roll. Carpark happened to have a slight slope, boy gets to the front seat, starts to turn the big circle round and round like Daddy. Luckily car rolls and lightly hits a barrier, boy remains unhurt, but still insist to not open the door. Daddy comes back, with candy, lures the boy to open the door. Then you guessed what happened next...
True story, honest to goodness. It happened to my uncle and cousin in Canada.
Really, young children left in cars will either play with the controls, or open the door and step out into the street himself. It is a VERY dangerous situation, from getting heat stroke to mandling with gear sticks and buttons, which I believe most kids are tempted to do. So the answer is, NOT OKAY!

I would never leave my child in the car alone, never ever, not in a million years. I always leave home in plenty of time if I have to be somewhere and allow extra time if I have to stop to get petrol or call in a shop. Be it 5 Min's or 20 Min's that's all it takes for someone to steal a car or even just steal a child. We live in a bad world full of strange people. A child depends on there parents, leaving them alone in a car is not being a responsible one, a child can't tell how long your going to be, they just know they have been left alone.

It's never okay to leave a young child in the car alone. Anything could happen. Not even if it's just for a few minutes. Your friend should have told the security guard at the store so that they could call the police to handle it.

NEVER! Next time, I'd call the cops. What if the child choked, or got into something he/she shouldn't, and caused a fire, or really anything! I went to Target one time, and went by a van where the parent had left the child in the car- but the cops were there thankfully. It's good your friend confronted the lady, but seriously, she'll do it again, and she needs to get caught. It's very harmful. Especially in the really hot or really cold weather as well!

No, it is not alright to leave a three year old locked up in a car all by himself. Many dangerous things could happen. One someone could stove the window in and take the child. Two, he could choke on something and have no one around to help. I know there is alot more, but cant think right now. By the way I think it is against the law.

No way in hell is it OK. Hasn't she ever seen the crazy people that car jack cars with kids in them (if the car is running), or child molesters taking him, or the child possible getting out of their seat and putting the car in gear? Or heat stroke. You think you'll only be a minute and it turns into 30, and the poor child suffers brain damage or worse because of it. Some people have no brains! Should have asked her if she would leave him home alone too. If they can't be by themselves at home, they can't be by themselves in a car, even for a minute. It only takes that long to change your life forever. I don't even want to think about it.

OMG! NO way! It's ALWAYS wrong to leave a kid in a car but especially at that age because I have a 3 yr old and if I was to try and leave her in the car she'd get out!! THe kid could have gotten out and got hit by a car or kidnapped....
If people are too lazy to deal with their kids they shouldn't have them!

No it isnt alright. If anything bad happened then that mother might have been charged with neglect.
Dont confront strangers though. That could be putting yourself at risk for getting beaten up by a crazy woman who leaves her kids alone in the car!

No NEVER at 3. State law in AL is 10 years old. That woman should have been reported to the state. CRAZY. This is why some people don't need to have babies. I am all for adoption in these cases.
What's wrong with this.... to cold, to hot, kidnapping, getting chocked on anything, unexplainable fire (when I was in college my car caught on fire for no reason and it all happened within seconds.. imagine if your children were in the car.) Anything could happen when children are unsupervised like that.

Absolutely not okay. Next time get the plate number and call the police immediately. If the car leaves before the police get there they can speak to the parent and send a referal to child protection services to follow up to make sure it doesn't happen again.
