Windows 98 was a GUI (graphical user interface) that runs on top of DOS, just like Windows 95 and it's predecessor, Windows 3.1. On the other hand, Windows XP was based upon the Windows NT code and as a result, is far more stable. Windows Media Center Edition is just XP with a few extra bells & whistles thrown in for multimedia.
The primary difference is that many, many current programs require Windows 2000 or later to run. Also, Windows XP recognizes tons of hardware without having to locate driver disks from manufacturers.
You can get used to the slight differences in the desktop layout and menus in a few days, but the main difference is crashes are far less frequent (and since XP is supported, you get security updates and patches)

1. Windows XP has a better user interface than 98.
2. Windows XP lets your programs run a little faster after a while.
3. Windows XP can be configured for different users, each of which can choose a different password, desktop and other settings.
4. Windows XP has better security features especially if you have Service Pack 2 and you keep it updated all the time.
5. Windows XP starts up faster (more than 2x).
6. So much more....
My advice: If you're thinking of upgrading, go ahead with Windows XP.
