Adobe InDesign is a layout program.
You don't need it for writing... a word processing program works for that. http://www.openoffice.org has one for free.

As far as getting it for free, it's not a free program, it is illegal to get it free in most ways this would be done.

For almost all programs, there is a free or inexpensive counterpart, search http://www.downloads.com and similar sites to find some.

You buy it or if you know where to look its free also try adobe website for a free trial
