Hi. Last night we found out we had a virus and found it was from my eight year old son looking at porn. I don't know why he would do that! My husband used to look at porn back in high school but he says he doesn't anymore so I know it couldn't have been him. I'm always around the computer while my son is on so he must be sneaking around at night and must have found out our password for the computer lock. I just don't know what to do! What's an appropriate punishment when boys look at porn?

ok, i'm not trying to blame anyone, but maybe it isn't your 8 year old son. alot of husbands lie about watching porn. just because he watched it in high school doesn't mean he stopped, and besides almost every porn site costs money, so I would check your credit card records and see if your husband has been using it. so sorry for your discovery.

Well some times some viruses make it look like you have been looking at porn when you haven't, it comes from something called a rouge dialler that "visits" these web pages when the router is on.

So it is neither your husband or your child.

Get some decent virus soft ware, then things like cookies and ad ware won't add rude things to your computer.

Also add parent controls so even if your kid does go on there for that reason he will find that it is locked out.

Also tell your husband he can watch porn on a DVD so the computer doesn't get a virus, because it could be him.
If it is don't make an issue out of it, some men like porn and love thier wives.

But i would say that the virus put this on the computer, we had the same thing and the computer was used in the front room in full view of every one then turned off during the night so no one looked at porn and it was ADware and mal ware.

This I would suspect from a teenager not an 8 year old. Hard to believe he could crack your password (unless you leave it lying around). Speaking of lying, would you really think your husband would tell you the truth? If I were confronted with this I might lie. What would you expect him to do? The truth? Too embarrassing. And you don't need credit cards to look at porn. Its everywhere online for free. Can cause computer problems too. Just change your password and know your son doesn't have it. If you look at the HISTORY part above on your browser (looks like a clock on Explorer) you can see where the users have been. 8 seems too young to figure out how to do whatever and if he did I'll bet it was an accident to begin with.

I'm curious why you're so quick to believe it's your 8 year old and not your husband. You say you're around when your son uses the computer. Are you always around when your husband does? I'd put a parental lock on the computer, or some kind of protective software with a password. Then if it's still on there, you'll know it isn't your child at all. Don't confront your child until you are absolutely 100% sure it's NOT your husband - you could hurt your relationship with your child needlessly.

Are you 100% sure it is him?

I would first sit and have a talk with him.
Not blaming just asking.

We are having a problem with the computer and we found this on here. Do you happen to know anything about it?
If he thinks he is in trouble or it was the cause of the computer breaking, he will shut down.
So just ask.
I found out my 14 year old had looked and he lost all privileges on the computer for 1 month and then after the grounding period he could only go on when I had the time to sit right next to him.

I told him I knew it was natural to want to see, however it was also
wrong. If he truly wanted to see a women's body, I could take him to a museum and see it as art. Not as porn...this is degrading and there is a difference.
Hoping he'll learn from his experience.

It worked for me, it might work for you?

Good luck

First of all, your husband may be to blame. I just don't see how an 8 year old would be smart enough to crack the password. Second, have a short talk with your son about why looking at porn is not a good idea. You may need to have the sex talk. Lastly, change each of your Internet content settings to Level 4 and create a password for those features. Good luck!

I think your husband is lying. If your son is only 8, I don't think he'd be that good at sneeking around and getting passwords to get to it. All men look at porn, not just in high school, and yes they will lie about it. Not all porn needs a credit card to get to, but an 8 year old wouldn't be able to to figure out how to find the free stuff.

I agree with others that there shouldn't be a punishment... this time. Maybe he heard about online porn from kids at school and he is probably just curious but I don't think it should be taken lightly either. You should talk to him about the problems with porn (that it is fantasy, that real women don't look like that, that once you see those kind of images they are ingrained in your mind forever, problems with addictions, it could affect his sex life in the future, etc...) of course only talk about what you think is appropriate.
Then maybe he could help you come up with computer rules and a punishment that he thinks is reasonable if he doesn't obey the rules. Also I would look into parental controls. At his age after you talk to him once... there should be a punishment the next time.

At 8 yrs, I don't think your son is looking at porn for stimulation, he's just curious about how the world works. I wouldn't punish my son for that, but I would for breaking the trust by sneaking around without permission.
Take away computer privileges for how ever long you see fit. Change passwords. I personally wouldn't confront about the porn, because then you'd have to do the birds and bees talk --but maybe it's time for that.

I would change the password, using a combination of numbers and letters that he cannot get, then restrict his computer use to none or only directly school work related. Though this is pre-pubescent, possibly normal behavior he needs to understand that it is not appropriate or acceptable. Kids are curious about a lot of things that are unhealthy for them. If you haven't had the talk, he has opened the door for it! Make sure you and your husband do this together and talk about your values, that you want to impart to him, and agree ahead of discussion with son. Without shaming his sexual feelings he needs to understand that you are disappointed that he disobeyed your family's rules and violated your trust.

Porn very freely available on the internet, don't buy the "it costs money" or that it is your husband, unless you really think it could be.

Can you see any of the history where whoever went and what time? I agree that you should try to get one of those programs, then you can monitor everything. It just sounds iffy- is your 8 yr old capable of finding out the password? I wouldn't punish your son.. especially right away when there's the possibility your husband could be the one.... he could be telling you he does't because he knows you don't want him to. Try to do some investigating first. then if you end up finding out it is your son, have a good talk with him. that's one thing I wish my parents did more with me. I turned out just fine, but I'm not very close with my mom, which I wish I were. Anyways, goodluck, and hope you find out which one did.
