People want to get drunk to escape themselves in a sense. However, if the loss of inhibition, brought on my intoxication, surpasses their ability to control themselves, they will commit acts they otherwise would not have done.

Some people believe they will not do it next time, they think their rational thought will remain intact, which is not always the case, so they wind up doing it again and again.

Eventually, some people realize there is a pattern that can only be prevented if they don't drink - so they eventually stop drinking.

Others "give up" and drink anyway, chasing the feeling of intoxication, willing to pay the price of public humiliation.

A thumbs down for speaking out against intoxication - that figures.

i am getting a bit fed up with people knocking the British drinking tradition. for hundreds of years the British pub has been a meeting place for locals and travellers to our towns and cities where we naturally reserved people can enjoy entertainment and drink and the vivaciousness of other people. sure a proportion of that stream of life is of dubious morality, and sure alcohol loosens inhibitions, but for every brawl and anti-social activity there are millions of positive experiences - people meet their future girlfriends, boyfriends, husbands, wives etc, people have fun. compare that to the sterile nightlife of most continental towns and even some of the cities and i know which i would go for every time - the british pub. now, take the british drinking tradition out of the contained environment of the pub and yes you have a problem. drinking on the streets is out of order and should be dealt with accordingly. that small percentage of our population that cause trouble after a night on the town are a problem, so they need dealing with and do get dealt with. whether under the influence of alcohol or not, anti social bahaviour, violence, disturbing the peace are all criminal activities and the police are there to deal with it.

I think people do it because they feel they can then blame the alcohol and use it as an excuse for their behavior, in an attempt to avoid the responsibility. (Usually doesn't work, though.)
