I bought an at home shaving kit with different sized combs....?

I can't get the damn thing to cut the different length the combs are? If I use a long comb, it cuts the same as if I didn't have any comb on it. WHY? What am I doing wrong. Someone please give me directions on how to use these. I am shaving my boy's head, but I want to keep in long on the top so I use the longest comb, but which way do I put it against his head. They are 'L' shaped. He looks horrible, but he doesn't know it yet....

use a smaller guard than what you are using. It will still be long. If you are using a 5, use a 3. It will not take off a lot more, but just enough.
You need to go from the front of the head back to start with.
Then you can touch it up after that.
My husband is a Marine, and I cut his hair everyweek.
