How come the Catholic church frowns upon divorced people remarrying, using contraception and eating meat on fridays, but yet seem to turn a blind eye to the fact a number of high profile cases of priests have abused children??

I would have thought that would have been far more serious a sin.

Pedophiles are drawn to professions where they can gain access to, and the trust of, children. It should not surprise that, for such men, the Catholic priesthood would have been nearly irresistable - a profession where not having a wife would not be the least suspicious.

If the church is most guilty of anything, it was in naively accepting the good intentions of those entering seminaries. Individual bishops were lack in their duties to protect their flock. But a lot of work has been done to rectify this.

As others have noticed, people who do this proliferate throughout our society - doctors, scout leaders, camp counselors. This isn't even really a religious question, so much as a sociological one. Frankly, I think five years after the Boston scandal broke, the only reason people still bandy this about is because of anti-Catholic bigotry.

After all, people can't get away with anti-semitism any more. So maybe laying the smackdown on the "papists" is the next easiest target.

It begs belief doesn't it. For an organization that does so much good can still protect these people, as its women as well as men that do this. I know its in them to forgive but don't they see by doing so insults people who have been abused. I certainly am insulted by it. I was abused as a child but not by a priest but I find it hard to believe that a world wide organization can turn a blind eye to this. It shows they don't believe the victims and their feelings are null and void. Don't they realise the hurt they cause with this, as belief is a big issue with victims. I'm still at the stage where I question myself "what did I do to have this done to me" , " what is it about me that says its ok" and did I give the come on at age six. Each time I see another priest ,who should be someone to trust, get accused and then dissapear within the church makes me wonder even more that if the church accepts this then why do I still have nightmares and was it my fault because if the church believes them then they can't believe me.
Maybe the church should be policed by society and not by themslves.

What these men have done is a terrible sin, and though many will see this as church double standards,it still has to point out those areas that are also wrong according to its spiritual teaching.
Jesus told the people not to do what the religious authorities do but to do what they said.
Having said that as catholic I think the Vatican handled the whole situation very badly and all these men should have been handed over to the civil authorities as soon as they were discovered, I do not think they were prepared for in any way, to deal with such betrayal in the clerical ranks in the early days, but as so many have been found doing these awful things, the church really needs to handle it as they must in all conscious do.
another thought that occurred to me is this, didn`t these men have these tendencies even before entering the priesthood, and thought that they could hide their immoral feelings behind the collar, no normal man suddenly decides to become perverted no matter how celebate they have to be, even a married man inclined to cheat, does so with another woman and not a child, no the perversion of these men was always in them.

Perhaps not the best terminology.

Research shows that most abuse happens in the home by a family member/family freind, and the small amount ot abuse that happens outside of the home is often by people who are known and trusted by the child.

The catholic church have been subjected to a prolonged slant on it's characer over a few wayward perverts who have been appointed to the preisthood.

Surely the catholic church should take definate and final action and strip these priests of their titles and report every single one to the police. And then bannish them from catholicism.

Pervy Preist's are not wanted whether or not they are Catholics, Protestants or any other religion, our religious leaders should be purer than pure, not sick eveil bast-ards.

That depends on whether you consider the happiness of children to be more important than sanctimonious bulls**t! Which clearly the Catholic Church doesn't!

And another thing - the Catholic Church is one of the richest organisations in the world, they own property, land and invest in anything from arms dealing to computer software. And yet their followers are among the poorest and still they expect them to dig deep and give to church funds.

The hypocrisy of any organised religion is truly beyond belief and yet so many gullible and needy people are taken in by it!

Personally I think religion should be banned!

A kiddy fiddling priest in Cardiff was running the local Catholic school's football team and youth club.

Perfect opportunity for him to molest young boys. Which he did. Luckily he was caught.

My family are Catholic but my mum is "lapsed" and I wasn't brought up in the religion. I don't regret it though, they seem a bit draconian for my liking, especially their stance on contraception and abortion. I can't agree with that at all.

Yes, the subject with the children is most serious. 1 Timothy Chapter 4 verse --3 "Forbidding to marry, " Actually its better to start with verse 1. God Bless.

probably because they don't accept that is what's going on,the catholics are a weird lot,but most people who call themselves catholic don't actually go to church they are lapsed catholicsthey also only believe that you should confess the sin to a priest not to god so the sin is kept within the church it'self

The Catholic church is a non-Christian cult. They believe Mary was sinless, but God's Word says ALL have sinned, including Mary.

Don't blame the actions of the Catholic church on Christianity.

Don't even get me started on the catholic church.

In answer to your question, if they can keep these rumours private, it's less damaging to their repuation. Sex before marriage etc. are endemically (is that the right word?) part of the outside world, and so do not reflect badly on the church.
