Depends on what exercises you do... if you do strength training & weights, then you can bulk up... a lot of cardio will get you into shape, but also burns a lot of calories. Shakes will get you bulkier.

This depends on the amount of food you eat, the types of food you eat and the amount of weight you use. If your attempting to bulk up understand that the heavier the weight the more mass you will build. The muscle will become used to the stress and grow. This will also create more weight on your frame. I read a study that claimed it takes 96 hours for the muscle to recover after a heavy lifting day, what does this mean to you? One to two body parts a day and don't work that part again for a full week. It will take about 3 months to show signifigant gains. I have always had a protein shake or two before and after my workouts. Go at your own pace at the gym, don't worry about the guys benching 315 or more, you will get there soon enough.

The answer is up to you. If as a result of your exercise you burn more calories than you consume you will lose weight (not necessarily get skinnier) if the opposite you will get bulkier. If engage in activities such as treadmill or running you will get thinner. Medium weight lifting, you will get more muscular.

When I took my Lieutenant Qualifying Infantry there were 30 of us in my class at the end of the first month the AVERAGE weight loss was 30 lbs and that included 6 of us who gained weight ( I was one of the six) It's not that you join a gym but what you do in it. Not exericse alone or diet alone but both together that make a difference. As you can see from my example it doesn't take long to make a difference.

Protein shakes are to supplement your daily diet. Healthy eating is more important and it helps with regular excercises. Besides joining a gym does not guarantee bulk or loss in weight; it depends in the muscle group you are training and the amount of weights you are lifting.

Joing a gym wont do anything. What you do at the gym will. Everything takes time, especially gaining muscle mass. Have your trainer set up a program that agrees with your goals.

If you focus on weights and muscle-building, then it would be more likely for you to be more bulky and heavy because of the muscles. However, you need to manage your gym routine as the weight can decrease as you persist the wrong way.
