Go down to Greenwich Village and do the coffehouse scene, for live music and food. I grew up in Jersey City ( across the river) and went to Manhattan all the time from when I was 13 years old.
In addition to hanging out in the Village, I liked to go to museums and art galleries, department stores-- and my friends and I liked renting bikes at Columbus Circle and pedaling thru Central Park.
There's so much to see and do in NY-- don't forget Chinatown; and also the Bowery, because it will give you a different outlook
on alcohol when you see all the bums lying in the gutters and doorways. Even the public libraries are outstanding. Also the South Street Seaport area is fun, and there are flea markets along Canal St. In NY you will get to eat reeal pizza, not the garbage from Pizza Hut and the other franchises. Remember that NY is very easy to find your way around (except for lower Manhattan ) because it's a grid with numbered streets. Get a little map for lower Manhattan. Have fun-- NY is one of the coolest places on earth.
